Just bought 2 £15 itunes cards off ebay where the seller emails you the codes.

Is there away to check that they are working without actually using them

Some guy sold me on on ebay and its not working and he won't refund he says contact apple?

You don't have to use them, as in buy anything, to check that they work. You can just credit them to your Apple ID and (assuming they work) the credit will be there when you next want to buy something.

I have only bought them in shops where you also get a "proof of activation" - to stop shopflifting from the display rack. As you say just credit the card value to your account to see that all is OK.
