Oooh! I remember it being a bit of damp string before. I do hope it's reasonably fast and reliable.

Fit as fiddles, thanks Laura.
Everyone's a bit bleary-eyed from early starts but life on the whole is pretty good.

Microwave broadband, no less, beamed across from the South Bank. No satellites involved, and they test the signal before they fully install all the kit. Suddenly got proper access to YouTube, i-player, Google Maps... it's bloody geek heaven!

You will never sleep again. Just saying...

Here, I am paying the price for sheer gluttony this evening. I think. Either that or something I ate was most definitely off.

Just hope it's all settled down for an early start tomorrow. Night grumpers

Fell down bottom three stairs on Sunday and sprained my foot - same one as last time, FFS!

Still, got a couple of days off out of it!
Seriously handy, take very special care with stairs. I know from personal experience. A sister in law of my dads partner fell down the set of stairs in her house and had multiple fractures in one of her ankles, requiring it to be pinned. Ouch.

KJ and jra very quiet too cold or too busy
Actually, it's been quite mild, but yes, fairly busy with getting a room ready to rent. I do get a cleaner in to do the lions share, because I have back problems, stemming from a trapped spinal nerve when I was 18, so my back always aches if I do too much bending down.

Hugs to everybody.

Does it make a ready meal or TV dinner?

Morning! I'm about 250 miles away from a crucial piece of paperwork. I'm feeling very, very grumpy. And hungry.

I was lucky this time, really - this is the second time I've missed a step in the dark but this time i didn't land sitting on my foot so it was a much less bad sprain. Still made me swear a lot, though.
I should learn to walk downstairs in the dark rather than scamper, methinks!

I know, I thought I'd read or heard it wrong when someone mentioned it to me. But no - broadband, transmitted from a mast to a dish. Essentially it's a form of wireless broadband but goes over-ground rather than up to a satellite and back down again, so is much less affected by weather than satellite broadband. So long as there is a clear line of sight from the mast to the dish (which is a diddy little dish on a pole on the roof) you can get connectivity.
To put it in context, as KJ says, our broadband was, effectively, a bit of wet string - 2.3mbps via a BT cable, and intermittent 3.6 off a dongle. As of Monday we're suddently up to 20mbps - I'm ecstatic!

Never walk down stairs in the dark. Find that light switch. It's very easy to miss the last step, for example.

I'm still on copper, waiting for fibre, but Plusnet deliver 17 Mbps and unlimited amount which isn't bad.

@handy Broadband, now u haz it, so plz think about backup to the cloud. I recommend

https://spideroak.com/personal/

which is super secure "zero knowledge encryption". It's free for 2Gbytes, so all those photos will be safe.

If only the wireless is slow and wired is fast, visit Amazon and look at Ethernet Homeplugs. It uses the mains like a wired network.

What are the costs after you've bought the unit?

Most of my internetty usage at the moment is on my phone, seeing as I'm all over the bloody place. Can't complain though. Better than nothing.

Still grumpy here. My chocolate intake is increasing, though. It's like there's a connection!

Google Drive offers 15 Gb free storage space just for having a Google account. So, I presume, if you need more storage space, you just set up more than one Google account.

Drop Box has also been mentioned on DS, IIRC.

Amazon Cloud offers 5 Gb of free storage space if you have an account.

Nuffink but power consumption, the system sends encrypted "radio" over your mains wiring, between the devices. So you need at least a pair.

It might struggle to send signals across extension leads or across a junction box, but the Amazon reviewers are wise to this, some models "just work" even with an extension lead.

It's not strictly speaking a wireless extender. It provides wired Ethernet connection without the Ethernet wiring running round the house if that makes any sense, your TV/PC/STB/console still connects to the device by an Ethernet cable but it's tidy and short.

All good, I like and use Dropbox too, but SpiderOak uses encryption and only you know the key, the SpiderOak people don't know it. So apart from spooks, no-one can see your photos but you.

Sorry about the 'puter stuff What will the lurkers think?

I'm home alone again. MrsKJ went out at lunchtime with her best mate I should have known when Tesco delivered 8x Speckled Hen and ready meal curry.

Anyroad, it's Grand Chef KJ time. As BG will avow, I have a soft spot for non preachy vegebubbletarians and I hate waste: the veggie boxes have yielded 3 cabbages, so it's time to use the oldest of them for soup.

There may be a hint of methane on this thread tomorrow.
