Hello all.

Just thought I'd let you know that my YoungPlum has been accepted into the high school that we wanted. I'm not at this point sure whether to be delighted or gutted. Obviously, I'm pleased for her as (a) it's her first real challenge in terms of interview and acceptance and (b) she really wants to go there but I'm gutted in terms of the news I got last week which is that my hours are now back to the minimum. If things stay as they are, we won't be able to afford for her to go there. All I can think to do is accept the place which is a challenge in itself as you have to pay a non-refundable fairly substantial deposit, and then hope that I've found a new job by the beginning of next year. Blind optimism seems to be the way to go - or to use the aussie slang "she'll be right, mate" or "she'll be apples"

Thanks for all the positive vibes and whatnot as I'm sure they helped us crawl over the finishing line to get a place!

If I'm singing the Milky Bar Kid ad song all day, I'll be after you lady!!

Thanks everyone for the congrats and good wishes and vibes and whatnot! I don't work this Friday so I'm going to get my CV updated and start the jobhunt. There aren't many jobs around still, but I'll just have to keep trying and try and stay positive.

Plummie - huge vibes from me too - and well done to her for getting in

Here, well, I'm grumpy. Eldest has finally finished coursework, submitted (possibly too late but since the tutor isn't replying to emails we have to trust to luck) and sat final exam. But - big but - forgot to order graduation ceremony tickets before the 9th May deadline - because - let's face it - there were at the time bigger things to worry about.

So, degree itself is tenuous anyway, but whatever the outcome, no ceremony Fedupdotcom.

On the plus side the youngest may have salvaged her foundation degree -

As for me, well, didn't get the job I interviewed for last week but am rather relieved as it saved me from making the decision. And work has picked up rather alarmingly well, which is pretty fortunate given that I have a new (second hand but new to me) car to pay for

If I could just sleep at night, life would be almost perfect (bar the bloody graduation ceremony. FFS )

I'll keep things crossed for two degrees and and some spare graduation ceremony tickets. Kids! My one is being strangely quiet, which means things are going either very well or very badly.

Dumb idea perhaps but are there any jobs at the school Plum? It's posh, right?

Not a dumb idea at all KJ. When I lived in Australia it wasn't uncommon for mums to work part-time as school receptionists, etc., in order to get a 25% discount on fees. Also, it's always a good idea to contact the bursar for info on applying for a means-tested bursary or any scholarship on offer. (Sorry for the intrusion peeps )

Evening

It's peeing down and I'm digging out my cardie too ... ok so maybe I can't say "again" but that's what's happening here, it's getting chilly!

KJ - school isn't "posh" as such, it is old-fashioned and the only reason it's fee-paying is because it's a Catholic school. For some reason they only get about 85% of the funding of state schools per pupil and so fees account for the rest, It's not a snobbery thing although that can't be said for all Catholic schools, I understand some further south can be a tad elitist. I'll certainly be looking into whether there are any jobs going at schools but very often they are part-time and that just doesn't cut it - that's the predicament I'm in now. I need a full-time job if I'm ever going to start being able to lead a more conventional life. It's a bit like being and old-age student living in digs. I need my own space, but for the time being I'd just settle for knowing that I could pay the basic bills.

Tomorrow (my rostered day off) is all about getting my act together, sorting out my cv and starting hunting. I need to sharpen my spears too

Sad - sorry to read about your graduation woes - I know the deadline has gone but would it not be worth ringing them and pleading? Parents have no shame, I have learned

Yo Sno! There was a convent attached to the school that I went to, there weren't many nuns still teaching though, probably from memory about 5 in those days.

Yoo hoo snowy!

Well, it's Saturday, I'm home... and I'm doing paperwork. Other people's paperwork. So I'm a bit grumpy.

But only a bit.
