BG: I actually do know where you're talking about! Been to a couple of picnics in the Bos and have also been to Amstelveen several times. You're right, you were well away from the crowds. Lucky! We're in Oost but just one major street away from Alexanderplein which is the Centruum. The tourist crowd is spilling over to here. There are a couple of small hotels opening here and a couple more in the planning although our neighbourhood group has objected to one of them and we'll probably win that one. The Troppenmuseum and Oosterpark are right down the street from me on one end the Dappermarkt at the other end of which we're in the middle of. No canal view but the Mauritskade is just at the end of the market for a canal walk with one of the only windmills in the city (Brouwerij Ij) at Zeeburgerstraat right there, too. There's nothing nicer than being dropped off in a canal boat down the street from your house after an evening at the pub.
I do know where you are, I think! Close to the zoo? If yes then we probably passed your street many a time.

Sad - . Hopefully second time around she'll know better what to expect etc. I'll keep everything crossed.

Hello peeps. Enjoying a busy half term catching up with friends and laundry. Marking and planning day today as I am finally succumbing to the usual germ frenzy. Then just six weeks till my new job . Scary stuff. Hopefully th shorter commute - 5 mins instead of 40 - will change things for the better. I will miss some of the people there a lot though. I am a little worried that I am too old for such a big change.

Hopefully you're all enjoying the more settled weather.

Happy Hump Day from damp and dreary Amsterdam. I'm not able to muster up much enthusiasm about anything today.

Laura: I hope you're OK. I haven't seen you here lately.

Amica: Hooray for the new job and shorter commute! Take it from me you're never told old for a big change.

SP: Sorry that Sadette failed her test. Better luck next time and hopefully you'll be able to retire your chauffeur's cap.

BG: I'm a hop, skip and jump from Artis. I've actually walked the distance from Hortus (Botanic Garden) once and from Artis a couple of times. Not in the past couple of years though. It's two stops on the #9 tram from me.

Would love to see any or all GOWs when/if you ever make to the 'Dam.

On a side note, I just realised that it's 8 years this month that I met Mr. Home. There's a whole range of smilies I could use to convey my true feelings on this.

Eight years! Wow! Time is zooming by. I have a very vivid memory, m@, of sending you a postcard from Schiphol airport, saying how I thought you'd love Amsterdam. Eek.

Amica, no way are you too old. It'll be fab.

I'm gearing myself up to finish a major piece of paperwork. It's 90% done and I've over a month before I have to submit it, so it should be a doddle. I could easily have off my to do list by this afternoon. And it would feel great.

So... maybe a cuppa first.

Was that for Halloween? I am feeling bloody grumpy. Next door had a party last night and the children there decided it would be a good idea to play football against the walls of my house at 3 30 this morning. Grrrr.. I shouted at them that I thought it might be time to stop now from my bathroom window. I didn't get back to sleep for an hour. I just feel groggy.
I hate Halloween.
Wish we were doing Poland...

Hollyoaks. Do the women end up with legs like tree trunks from wearing short skirts?

So close! The correct answer was go see Spectre and eat blueberry cheesecake ice cream. Both very good btw.

KJ - never seen it but going on my own experience of short skirts no. It's probably something to do with the name... Hollyoaks...

You know I have that card still! I've got a box full of cards, letters, etc. from before I left Ireland. I think I have another one from you from a salt mine in Poland.

Wish we were doing Poland...
I hope we can all make the trip next year. Fingers crossed....

Yay for cake! What kind?

More cake is good, too!

I got my flu jab a couple of hours ago so just waiting for the reaction. Maybe I'll be lucky like last year and have no reaction and no sore arm at all.

We had lots of fog here, too over the past couple of days but it seems to have lifted this afternoon and the sun came out for a while.

Banana cake here. Only cake I ever bake... and only because I can't bear to throw away over ripe bananas

It's a lovely thought, that those things still exist. It's like anchoring memories.

Did someone say cake? Your banana one is very nice Sad. I should make it more often... but then I'd eat it...

I may be baking banana cake within the next 24 hours. Just saying...

Mr Sad's about to fly home from China, first time he'll have experienced that empty house feeling you get when your fourteen year old pooch passes away. I hope he can get used to it quicker than I have.

Rather foolishly I asked the vet to cremate Sad dog and now have both the ashes and a hefty bill to pick up He was worth it though

I've had a bit of a week and if I told you where I was going tomorrow you'd be lost for words (and one day I will blog about all this) but suffice to say tomorrow night I plan to drink
