Oooh, whereabouts did you live? Spent pretty much every family holiday there as a kid. Only managed to get back once with my own kids as Mr Sad isn't a fan of holidays in the UK and also doesn't like going back to the same place repeatedly.

I'm not quite sure how it got to this time of night...

Never mind - at least it's cooling down.

Near Salcombe and Kingsbridge.

(*) You'll see a lot of Yamaha and Mercury outboards in the estuary. They are the daddies of outboard propulsion.

They take sailing racing very seriously down there. There is a line of buoys along the western bank of Salcombe harbour to demarcate a safe passage for non racing craft, passing the Marine Hotel.

In the vid above, you can clearly see Start Point lighthouse.

The lifeboat concerned is the Baltic Exchange III, a Tamar class design. It's permanently moored near the entrance of Batson Creek in a dredged channel.

Mistakes/corrections/additions in the above. Typos excluded.

(1) The Poundstone marker needs to be aligned with a marker on the shore (both white lights), in order so you will miss the Bass Rock, the Wolf Rock and the Blackstone, when entering the harbour in difficult conditions and weather.

(2) Easterly, should read southerly.

(7) The Great Mewstone is also known just as the Mewstone. Also, Mewstone can be spelt Mew Stone.

Jra I love that part of the world having spent many a family holiday around Torquay, Paignton and Dawlish. This was our first hols without the kids, them being all over 18 now, so we tried somewhere new. We went to Bournemouth and it was really lovely. The beach is fab and there is lots of free entertainment going on all the time. Unfortunately working in a school a September break is out of the question. The house is still in one piece which considering this was the first time we had left the kids on their own is quite an accomplishment, if they did have any parties they cleaned up well after themselves!

So, no doubt you've seen Dawlish Sea Wall, either by train or walking along it.

Dartmouth has to be my favourite place in the world.

I always enjoy watching the lower ferry, which as far as I know, is unique in the UK.

Dartmoor. The Dewerstone. High Willhays. Meldon, Burrator and Avon Dam reservoirs. Dartmeet.

Exmoor. Especially the coast. Lynton and Lynmouth.

The coastline in general.

The river Tamar. Hamoaze.

Brunel's rail bridge (Plymouth). Next to the road bridge.

Plymouth Hoe. Smeaton's lighthouse.

Salcombe, Kingsbridge. The view of Salcombe Estuary from East Portlemouth.

The rivers Avon, Erme and Yealm.

Various beaches, e.g. Slapton Sands and the Lea. Elender Cove, Venericks Cove, Soar Mill Cove, Sunny Cove (Salcombe), Lannacombe Beach, Mattiscombe Beach, Hope Cove, Blackpool Sands etc. The view from Strete Gate.

The Start Bay Inn (Torcross), Tower Inn (Slapton), Queens Arms (Slapton), Globe Inn (Frogmore), Ashburton Arms (West Charleton), Hermitage Inn (Kingsbridge), Fortescue Inn (Salcombe) etc.

Bolt Tail, Bolt Head, Sharpitor, Prawle Point, Start Point.

Jra I remember one especially hot summer when the sparks from the train kept setting the grass banks alight. Also another year walking back to Dawlish along the bottom of the wall during high tide and a very rough sea. Very scary and a little bit daft.

Hello all - and welcome to new peeps

Just back from that there area. It was a great holiday - even with the kids! The weather was fab and the scenery beautiful. The dog is definitely skinnier after all the swimming but I am not - too many cream teas and, "Ooh that looks like a lovely beer garden."

Drive back today was hellish. Not looking forward to back to work. I hate the end of the big hols.

And I never got to see any kittens.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.

From Exeter St. Davids (on the train) you run down the side of the River Exe, with beautiful views of the Exe estuary, then continue along Dawlish Sea Wall (including 4 tunnels), until you come to a sharp bend (Teignmouth, pronounced Tin-muth) before leading along the River Teign (passing the low Shaldon Bridge), followed by arriving at Newton Abbot rail station. Then the train continues onwards to Totnes and beyond (usually Plymouth), but sometimes as far as Falmouth.

I only have a passing aquaintance with that part of the world, sadly, but what i know of it I like.

No kittens yet, Amica - we were supposed to pick them up today but they've gone missing
One very sad Melony could do with some GOW vibes - we will get some rescue kits, of course, if our farm kits don't turn up, but she's very upset, bless her.

Hugs to anybody that needs it.

Little known fact.

Tony Soper (the naturalist) used to own a property near Gerston Point. See map above.

Oh no

Will send vibes but yes, you're right, plan B for rescue kitties is definitely the way to go. She must've been so excited. Poor little Melon and poor missing kits.

One benefit of getting up early was that the field was free of footballers so the dogs could have a good run. Now they are flat out fast asleep while I have holiday washing and Sunday lunch to do - and they say it's a dog's life!

No kittens. *sigh*
And Mr M and I just had a really "mature" exchange of views on the way to the supermarket which has resulted in me sitting fuming in the car, in the car-park, minus keys, so stranded, while he takes farking ages to buy three items.

I really, really miss having a dog. I've probably had them half my life and I prefer with than without. Even those horrible winter evenings when you'd rather stay in work out fine once you're out walking with your doggy.

But our boy is at university now, so we're free to do what we want, work permitting, and I'm travelling loads... And I don't know how a dog would fit into all that. I could never do kennels - too soft.

handy - you'll have to put itching powder in his socks. (((handy)))
