Karen's lift - "professional reasons"

Anyone know what those reasons were, having seen the dance itself?

To distract from Nicky's weird 'sticking out his chin like he's about to start a fight' head position?

I don't think it was anything to do with the dance. It was pretty half-hearted as lifts go. I think she was just meeting her contractual obligations.

I agree. The whole thing was highly scripted, from the leaking in advance to Craig's OTT reaction and marks, to the syntho-outrage and the "ooh I didn't know, silly little me" reaction from Karen later.

I just wondered if anyone could see any actual dance reasons for that lift. Because I couldn't.

no, it was definitely because she had been asked to do it by the producers.

Aliona's broken/paired with someone who's 103.

We need controversy and you need to show you can create more waves than Katya did.

People were tweeting Nicky and telling him that the lift was illegal in the waltz so he was aware as well as Karen.

I do think it was partly scripted but I think that both Karen and Nicky were happy to go along with it. I don't think the lift would have been put in unless Nicky was happy for it to be included as well.

I do think they were shocked at how severely they were marked down though. That part was genuine imo.

Indeed. This is one prediction that I actually got right - as soon as I read that she'd been warned but was going ahead anyway. The Westlife fans are pretty much guaranteed to keep him in the competition even if he is bottom of the leaderboard, so the risk was always going to be low that it could backfire.

I know, for example, that Brendan did something similar last year when he put an illegal lift in his rumba with Blulu. However, I do think there was a good artistic reason for a lift at just that moment in the song (the fact that he didn't give a sh1t if they went out must have helped, mind you). But there was absolutely no 'lift' moment in that dance, and she shoved it in right at the beginning when she needn't have done so.

I'm not a betting person, but I would put money on the 'professional reason' being 'because I am contracted to do what I'm told'.

Are you a lawyer, or in advertising, or a master of misdirection, or just good at spotting devious truths?

BIB Could well be true.

I also agree, I think she just did what she was told to do. It sounded really scripted.

Judging from tonight's episode, it seems as though the reason was so that the producers could play Westlife's (awful) version of 'You Raise Me Up' over their intro
