Lack of buzz for Emmerdale anniversary, unlike EE and Corrie
SamuelW

Have you noticed there is a lack of buzz and hype for Emmerdales 40th anniversary? As someone who barely watches the show, I have hardly seen any buzz or media publicity for anniversary week even though we're just 2 days away. Contrast this to EastEnders and Coronation Street who got loads of publicity, buzz and media interest.

Why do you think Emmerdales anniversary has so little buzz and hype? Most people who dont watch the show wouldnt know that it's such a big week coming up for the show. I know its only the 3rd biggest soap but I was expecting a bigger hysteria about thsi week but the newspapers and most people arent really aware of it.

I did, however, notice it taking the main picture on most of the TV mags this week - a massive rarity.

It's just a case that the trailers are rubbish, the show isn't in great condition (though last night was fab and will hopefully continue from there) and yeah, Emmerdale is not and never has been the hype machine or "national event" that EE and Corrie can be, even when it can be frequently ten times better.

There's nothing shocking about this. I suspect we'll hear more next week, hopefully more radio/TV mentions etc

No, I haven't noticed a 'lack of buzz' personally. Perhaps you feel it more it you actually watch the prog and see all the various sls coming together over a period of weeks ready for the huge drama next week, particularly the live ep.

How can you expect to get a 'buzz' out of a show you don't watch?

A lot of the buzz for these things is generated by the media and that's what gets extra viewers tuning in.

It does feel like Emmerdale has been low key in comparison to the other two soaps.

Because Emmerdale is more story based, while EE was all about sensationalism...

I agree. It's like the live final of Big Brother nowadays. It's probably a big deal to those who have watched that particular series but even the date of the final probably passes by those who haven't.

With that being said, I have noticed an increased number of ED threads on this forum, which made me watch a bit of Thursday's episode.

I do think that big part of the lack of hype is that the whole "live anniversary episode" stunt has been done to death; twice by Corrie, twice by The Bill and of course once by EE.

The novelty of a live soap episode doesn't have the same effect as it once did. It looks quite passé.

I think there has been loads of Buz around Emmerdales 40th.

I still think there's a huge appetite for it look at the EE and Corrie live eps which aired in the same year.

Plus Emmerdale has never gone live before so there's the novelty factor of that.

Although we have had a few in recent years live episodes are still rare enough for them to be a huge draw.

Yes I have noticed the 'lack of buzz' as you rightly put it. I only realised a few days ago that the 40th anniversary is next week. I thought there was another week to go.

The lack of hype is probably due to there being nothing interesting going on. You've got Chas and the three muppets who are obsessed with her, although I have no idea why. I can't be bothered to go on about the rest.

Very dire story lines but despite that, next week should be brilliant.

Yaay, a new viewer! It's worth watching next week at least, if only for the live ep and you might find you get into it .

I watch Emmerdale and sadly I agree with the OP, there has been no buzz, during EE 25th anniversary and Corrie's 50th there was loads of hype and excitement, it was dominating the magazines, newspapers and social-networking sites!

Unfortunately Emmerdale is only really considered as the starter in terms of the rest of the soaps.

However I will at least expect 8 million for the LIVE episode. Anything lower will be embarrassing for the show!

But what do you expect? The trailer was terrible

I wish Carl King was in EE, I think he's a fantastic villain.
Spoiler
I doubt he's the person getting murdered though, that seems too obvious.

I was never going to watch for the live episode alone, but I might take your advice and take in all of next week.

I disagree that there has been a lack of buzz about the 40th. I think there's been quite a lot of hype. Perhaps I've noticed it more though because emmerdale's the only soap that I watch. I've enjoyed all the build up and am looking forward to the live ep. Hope it goes well for them.

Apart from the fact I do watch other soaps, I agree totally with you

It's not really about build-up in the show and the way the storylines are coming together it's about external hype in the media eg. newspapers, magazines, Televison features, billboards etc etc.

Sure, I actually meant all the external build up in the media. But like I said, I only watch ED so it's quite likely I zoned out of all the build up to the live episodes of the other two

Plus point for that is we have no idea who is going to die most soaps are ruined by hype and spoiled by spoilers IMO

The thing is is that on Corrie's 50th and EastEnders 25th, the shows had been absolutely on form and such gripping to watch - especially Corrie, with the Molly/Kevin reveal, the Leanne/Peter/Nick storyline, the John storyline not to everybody's taste I know - but big storylines that were really addictive viewing. EastEnders had had the 'Who killed Archie?' which was fantastic, and Emmerdale has... had a bit of a lukewarm affair storyline and the whole Macey clan are boring.

Corrie and EE also had secrecy angles - who would die in Corrie during the tram crash and who would be revealed as Archie's killer in EE. Although this angle fell flat in Corrie since the two characters they killed off Ashley and Molly were heavily speculated about beforehand and the other two deaths were not even of significant characters.

I meet up with a few ladies every Friday and they all used to watch until recently. I asked them if they were going to watch the live episode but non of them had any interest whatsoever, in fact none of them even realised it was happening

Corrie and EE are treated differently by the press, whether it is warranted or not. They aren't the massive ratings winners they used to be but still pull in decentish figures all year round whereas ED just doesn't seem to have the same appeal.

Emmerdale has been dull as dishwater now for the best part of 18 months. I think casual viewing is the only thing keeping the ratings level because it sure as hell isn't the storylines pulling in the punters. The show is the pits right now. Thats why no one is talking about it.

I cannot believe the EP has managed to get a promotion to Corrie. I really fear for them now.
