After viewing the My Channel page on youtube a box pops up saying this is how you will now appear and shows your full name against the icon .

Then when you click the opt out button a list of why not reasons . What's it got to do with them anyway ?.

There's little I hate more than this current internet obsession with trying to get people to use thier real name. One of the main reasons I've never joined Facebook is because I don't want to use my real name, if any other website I use wants to force me to, then I'll stop using it.

It gives you the option to say you don't want to. I had that too.

Perhaps people will think twice about posting such moronic garbage in the comments section if they are forced to use their real name.

I've a feeling there's going to be quite a few 'John Smiths' about

But seriously, I agree it's quite disgusting the likes of YouTube (or anything Google owns), Facebook etc.. want you to disclose anything and everything.

'Disgusting'? Seems a bit extreme...if you don't like it don't use the site

You are given the choice, however having to provide a reason to why is none of their business.

I would have thought the poor commenting was due to poor moderation.

I think there is something to be said about using your real name on line as most people on forums and comments sites seem to hide behind a wall of anonymity and post not only moronic but down right disgusting things.

Just look and Facebook and Twitter where the law has actually done things about people who post and say antisocial things whether they are saying stupid stuff about blowing up a plane or crude sexual jokes about missing children.

Free speech is a privilege but really just because you can say doesn't mean you should.

Can you imagine trying to moderate a site like YouTube though? And surely poor commenting comes from poor users

Using a real name wouldn't stop anyone from posting dreadful things because a lot of people share the same name so it's hardly just unique to them.

I would not use my real name for security reasons, We all know that internet sites say they take security seriously but they always say that and then you start getting dodgy e-mails.

You don't have to use your real name with Facebook, i know a few people on there that don't have their real names.

But surely your IP address will be linked to your ISP account which will have your real name. I think in the future everything will be connected to your real name, particularly if the clamp down on trolls and anonymous troublemakers plus use of Facebook to login continues apace.
You don't have to use your real name with Facebook, i know a few people on there that don't have their real names.
If they're found out, their accounts will be closed. Facebook has taken action against a few people who used fake names to enter competitions.

Yeah, but can your average user of the site see my IP address, or my ISP account from these things to see my real name? I don't think so.

I doubt these people enter competitions and how can facebook prove it is not their names?

I have changed mine a couple of times, ok not lately I must admit, but I have used variations of my names in the past

If you aren't going to be doing anything untoward, then you have no reason to fear. Perhaps there's a reason a lot of people don't want their name appearing on the site... spam posts, flamaing, causing arguments, posting racist or hatemongering rubbish... YouTube especially is full of it. If it puts people off doing that then surely it's a good thing?

As Paddy (if that is even your real name...) has said, if you aren't doing anything that you shouldn't be doing then you have nothing to worry about. I've never bad any issue with using my name online.

There's no way you should have to use your own name on the internet for something like youtube.

I post videos of the foxes and badgers in my garden, so why would I want people to know my name when I do that?

It is my real name, I use my real name on any site I am registered with. I don't see the problem, I'm not doing anything wrong so have nothing to hide/fear.

You, Mr CoolboyA, if that is your real name, are quite different it seems! Your Twitter link gives your first name away and your most recent uploaded pic on Twitter seems to give your full name away (along with your horrible taste in TV programming!)

When I signed up for youtube I only had to give an email address and pick a user name so my real name is in my google account .

So I opened up my google profile and found this

I respect your personal decision but there must be a reason why most people have usernames on the internet, and it can't be that they're all up to no good .

I recently gave a (much-appreciated I'm sure ) review of something I bought on M&S and before signing up for it they tell you not to use your real name (or your name as it appears in your online account). It's a clear instruction at the initial log-in but I can't navigate back to that page, here though it's a clear recommendation:
Remember this is a public forum, so we recommend that you give your reviews a Pen Name. You can change it at any time, and all your previous reviews will show the new Pen Name ~ M&S.

Google's policies don't require you to use your actual name. Was a big hullaballo over it when they tried to insist on real names on Google+. Search for #nymwars
