Why isn't Gloria (Sue Johnstone)
working this well for me. I love her normally in Brookside, Royle Family, Jam & Jerusalem, Silent Witness, but just can't warm to her in Corrie?? Is it just me, she's like an older version of Tracey in the acting division and I don't want to sound harsh?!?!

I too have thought about this.
Maybe it's Sue's age, she seems a little shaky for want of a better term. When she created strong characters in The Royle Family and Brookside she was younger, probably healthier, then when you've played a character I presume it's like riding a bike and not something you forget how to do which is why she still works in The Royle Family now, maybe creating a whole new regular character at this time of life is a bit much for her. It does sound stupid as other elderly actors manage it but I can't think why else she is so bad in this. |

This is the first time I've watched Sue, the crap writing to blame when it was annouced she being cast for this role and her other acting jobs, she been given high praise. I find her character irritating and I want her to leave.

Corrie must be a heavy workload but having said that Waking The Dead, which she was doing until recently, must've took quite a bit of time to film as well and she was great in that.
Maybe it's because you get more time on a finite series to refine your performance in each scene whereas everything is so fast on a soap. |

She's just too much, in every sense. The writing has been terrible, maybe it's the rewrite they had to do because of Sue's illness? Either way they need to tone her down, keep her the right side of the bar and involve her in a dramatic story, away from this silly 'comedy'.

But if the scriptwriters in Coronation Street are happy with what they are doing, then they should be sent down the cellar of the Rovers and not come back up. Sue should be miles better than this. Age is not a factor, and anyway she is fantastic to look at, and is not that old anyway. |

The character of Gloria is just dreadful...no substance to her at all. Maybe if the character was introduced in bits and drabs over a six month period then it wouldn't have been so bad.

I have to agree with the majority of the comments here. I was looking forward to her joining but Gloria is just a dreadful character. I really can't see Sue Johnstone sticking around in this thankless part for long unless the writing and characterisation drastically improve. Surely she must know the part is rubbish?

![]() Not quick enough in Gloria's case! As opposed to the fantastic Sue herself. |

I think shes alright but then i havent seen her in anything else so i cant compare her to another show.
I think shes suffering the same as any new character. Shes been in loads of scenes and there seems to be a rush to get her storylines so shes always doing something. I quite like the rovers pub competition but i can understand why it annoys others. |

Wow, what a shitty ending to a shitty character arc for an amazing actress.
I bet Sue regrets signing up for Corrie in it's current state. She needs to go back to serious BBC dramas. |

I like Gloria a lot. The recent scenes between Gloria and her daughter Stella over the B&B was very funny!! Corrie is very good at that, with some funny scenes and dialogue usually poppin up to keep the fans happy.
