Monday 16th October 1972.

Mum and Grandma were both keen to watch the new soap offering from ITV being fans of Crossroads & Corrie. My elder sister and I, on the other hand, were not so enthusiastic and, indeed, were rather underwhelmed by the show...

40 years on, from the sublpine area between Milan & Switzerland, I am a regular viewer, albeit via the Internet!

This milestone must put it up there with other long-running 'classic' TV shows such as Corrie, Blue Peter, Dr Who and so on.

It's been mocked and criticized but it is still one of 'the big 3' soaps in the UK.

It's also broadcast in onther European countries, North America and Australiasia and to British Armed Forces abroad.

So, love it or loathe it, its popularity and longevity cannot and should not be denied or ignored:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EMMERDALE!!!!

My first memory of Emmerdale FARM was when I was a very small person - Annie Sugden was giving her wayward sons Jack & Joe a right telling off in her kitchen about "pulling together". I think I loved her right away.

Happy Birthday Emmerdale.

I always think of it as my soap, having lived near the YTV studios all my life and recognising most of the outdoor locations that they use.

I used to like seeing 'Tate Haulage' vans heading back to the studio whilst I waited for my morning bus.
