Back in 1972 when Coronation Street had been on our television sets for just 12 years. The early 70s was a difficult time for the show’s production team as many of the core cast members left suddenly either due to illness or for another job. Longstanding characters such as Bet Lynch, Ivy Tilsley, Deidre Hunt and Rita Littlewood were developed in this period, whereas now familiar faces such as Gail Platt, Sally Webster and Roy Cropper were yet to appear on our screens.

The very first episode of Emmerdale was aired in 1972, opening with the funeral of Jacob Sugden on 16 October 1972. In this first episode, Jacob’s son Jack returns to inherit his father’s farm, despite not having seen his family since leaving Emmerdale for London eight years previously.

Thanks for putting that up. Brings back a few memories. We used to go round to a girl from school's house at lunch time to watch it. I think it was on a couple of times a week then .

The Woolpack looked a bit rough then , but I suppose most pubs looked like that 40 years ago. I'd forgotten that Jack was played by a different actor then. The whole programme seemed to be very slow moving with gaps in the dialogue, very different from today.I assume the girl on the horse was Marian Wilks.

Thanks for the links, really enjoyed watching that! I was only 2 when it first went out so hadn't seen it before. The original arrangement of the theme music is really atmospheric, I love it.

Can we have an appearance of the original theme tonight? Don't expect it for a second, but wouldn't be a bad touch.
