Now I don't really watch Emmerdale these days, the odd ep here and there. I'm only 22 but I have seen the first set of episodes that were produced in 1972. I can say I really enjoyed it and it was different to what we get now. There was a real feel of the country, and everything felt like a bit of escapism. You had class characters, The Wilkes, The Sugdens, that family with a child whom I forget the name of, Amos. These were all class characters that shaped how the soap would gain an audience.

I notice that from about the plane crash onwards, this all changed radically, with the obvs name change. With all this 40th anniversary stuff, I don't see much of the original series, mainly just the odd clip of Annie Sugden. I guess my real question is, do the producers find this version of the show dated and maybe an embarrassment. It is certainly of its time, but it was where the show started. I'm not saying it was perfect, some of it was pretty cheesy. There were very few fires, or explosions etc, but the story was there.

One thing I have noticed, is that originally Jack was a wealthy author, who had made his money writing a book. I wonder why this was never brought up again. Back then, only the blacksmith had a copy, but these days with the internet, Diane could discover a secret account Jack saved money in all those years ago. If she ever were to leave, that would be the ideal way.

Anyway, those were my initial thoughts!

Keep watching, the early episodes are an absolute joy!

Today's show has done as much as possible to distance itself from Emmerdale Farm, it's a great shame and very insulting to long term viewers.

They'll unfairly pick out the most mundane clip for these retrospective shows and then smugly talk about how much the show has changed as if it's a good thing. All of that great history is overlooked, nobody talks about how the show's first murder came just 25 episodes in. How the show tackled rape and all the fodder for today's soaps all in the early years.

As for Jack's book, it was last mentioned during his funeral episode.

I cherish memories of scenes with Annie and Grandad, Amos and Mr Wilks and Alan Turner and Mrs Bates. Rosemary Kendall was hardly a typical teen of the era. I recall my gran saying she was "simple" - LOL!

Wish the Tv channel Granada + was still on air
They used to show lots of old Soap episodes
Would be good as its Emmerdales 40th if they showed some entire episodes right from the beginning , shame they couldn't have brought Annie Sugden back for an episode, perhaps she could come back for baby Jack's christening
