Looking at recent ratings, Eastenders and Coronation street have not had a rating of 10m since about march. My question is do you think Eastenders or Coronation Street will ever get 10m+ rating again or any other soap?

Except for very special occasions like Christmas or a live episode or at a push a legend like Dot Cotton leaving the answer is never.Soaps are one of the biggest attractors of viewers regularly to television but in a multi channel age and changing society they are a genre that arent as popular as they used to be and in terms of viewers however their counted much less of a draw.

I really think these days it's hard to say. I bet this time last year nobody would have thought that EastEnders with the exit of the iconic, much-loved Pat would be considerably out-rated by Corrie with Becky's exit, a character who had only been really high-profile for the preceding three years of her stint. That episode will probably end up being the biggest soap rating of the year.

EastEnders has certainly taken a hit ratings wise and its new average number of viewers seems to be permanently lower.

I agree. Before we had tons of channels, it was just 3 which very slowly became 4 and then 5. So people were more pushed to watching soaps if they wanted to chill out with the TV. Now with loads of channel, plus games consoles, the internet etc, there's a lot more to do!

I think soaps though, do go through bad and good ratings. It really is a case of them trying to do story lines that they'd already covered and change them a bit and not make them too alike to the other soaps (which they're not always successful with!) I guess whether they catch on or not, must be quite hard to suss out.

Depends if Downton Abbey is against it; if so EastEnders may struggle to hit 10m. But it is a big show at Christmas.

As for Coronation Street...possibly Britain's Got Talent week if they sandwich it between the two shows again and have a good storyline to keep people hooked.

I think it beat Downtown in the ratings last year and was the most watched programme. I forget how many viewers tune in for Xmas 2011.
I think this year they might do better (-Wedding/Max secret/ hopefully Dereks exit (whodunnit) )

Like a lot of other posts, I'm guessing Christmas/New Year's time.

To be honest, if EastEnders were planning a live episode next February (28th anniversary anyone? ) it'd only get about 9-11million at best.

I do think though, that the 'big 3' could get those figures again, should the number of episodes a week decrease from 4-6 back to 2-4, then the quality should go up by miles.

The BBC is putting Call The Midwife in the 9pm slot against Downton this year, with Eastenders in the 8-9 slot. I'm not sure what ITV are putting on against it but I don't think there's anything that will put a significant dint in Eastenders ratings. It managed to beat Downton last year so without that competition, it might even beat it's own ratings from last Christmas. Though with it being a Branning-centric episode, I fear I'll find it difficult to get through without falling into my usual post-Christmas dinner coma

Downton Abbey won the christmas day ratings EastEnders only won in the much reported overnights but the subsequent revising of the figures put Downton as the winner. This was widely reported

Seriously? I read several reports that Eastenders beat it in the ratings and won the highest Christmas Day ratings for 2011? Do you have a source?

Thank you for the link I had no idea about that. It seems Downton Abbey is a lot more popular than I thought.

They'll get 10m+ again when they pull their finger out and give the public some gripping drama that get's the country talking.

I've never known a time when the soaps have gone through such a boring and tedious period. There's nothing that interests the public and the ratings are reflecting this.

I think any soap that gets 10 million + would be special occasions like Christmas or something like a two hander

Downton Abbey is hitting 10 million at the moment in it's normal series, and beating x factor and strictly in the ratings on sundays. It has yet to dip below 9 m each week. It's a powerhouse. That's before the christmas episodes. It might dip a little bit with Call the midwife at the same time, but it's got the lead in with the series on right now. It shows that when a show gets it right for the right viewers, the ratings are still high regardless of the multi channel choices now. As far as I am concerned, some may disagree, Downton Abbey is still a posh continued drama. As close to soap as you can get, without the title for it to be ok.

With the soaps they usually hit 10 million on a massive publicised storyline or climax. Someone leaving or christmas. I would imagine christmas would be the next time for such ratings. Be interesting what the soaps get and what the Downton and Call the midwife get.

Probably Eastenders around xmas time, with Derek being killed off and Max's secret, Lauren and Joey being found out and so on.

Wasn't Corrie the last soap to have 10m Earlier this year with the Carla and Frank story line.

I don't think they ever will to be honest, I think the soaps are long past their best and the days when they topped the ratings are long gone. They might even go out of fashion altogether like the traditional sitcom has.

Emmerdale peaked at 9.8m on Wednesday and corrie and EastEnders had 10m+ at the start of the year and no doubt both soaps will again in December/Jan
