Series 5 will never be beaten.

6 and 7 were okay but since then it's been a rocky road...

Season 5 was the game changer.

Diana Vickers was imo the person that changed it from a karaoke competition into a star search. her lack of post X Factor success is gutting.

edit - bar leona, but she was always the exception.

Laugh indeed out loud. Vickers a game changer. I've seriously heard it all.

I think she was. Maybe not in quite the way superstar suggested, but I do believe her participation and success on the show has certainly had a strong influence on the later seasons.

Big Brother peaked at the same times. A lot of reality shows seem to peak at around that time and then go further and further downhill.

Series 5 was good but a tiny bit overrated on here. The fact that Eoghan got as far as he did took the shine off a little. Still, there were some great acts that year.

Series 7 had the strongest 'cast', the best dynamics between contestants, and the highest number of marketable and/or talented contestants. The only thing that let it down was the producer manipulation that became extremely evident that year. Still, it was my favourite series by a mile.

Series 4 was the worst series, even worse than series 1, and they knew it.

Series 5 was an attempt to make the series more relevant. Diana Vickers did have some success afterwards including a number one single, and JLS who came 2nd also found success.

Sorry still not convinced. However I m quite shocked no one has mentioned the winner of series 5 Alexandra.

Vickers and her one dimensional schtick was a nail in the coffin for me. From her I lost my voice so she could get a free pass and then being seen around a bonfire screaming like a banshee. Indeed in was a change. A change to the farcical perhaps.

Series 5 was by far the best. Great casting of acts, the majority of them being very talented, and a great panel of judges.

Series 7 has killed the show.

Far too much manipulation. People may have lapped it up at the time, but by the time series 8 came around, viewers didn't want to invest in the show again only for them to manipulate it all over again. The show is in decline thanks to that series. They just about got away with Jedward but then they had to go and step over the line...

Simon doesn't care now though, since he's got what he's always wanted - an American version.

I think she was. She was the first 'unique' act on X Factor. Before then we just had the lives of Beverley Trotman singing Gloria Gaynor week in week out.

Series 5 saw the show become more relevant and Diana was the stand out act in that respect- it meant that all of the other contestants adapted to that. Then after we started to get more atypical singers in the competition.

I still think series 2 was the best series because any one of Shayne, Journey South, Andy, Brenda, Nicholas or Maria could have won the show and I'm not sure that there's been as many potential winners in any series since.

Series 5 was ok though at the time I wasn't convinced about the JLS hype. Other than the girls category I'm not sure it was any better than any other year. Eoghan peaked early and him apart there weren't that many in with a chance of winning.

It's curious that series 7 gets talked up as the best series as this was the series with all the controversy over Cher and Katie.

I agree, it's only really contestants from 5 and 7 that I remember, apart from Leona. Cher, Diana, Janet, Katie, Aiden, Ruth, Laura, Rebecca, JLS, TreyC...

It seems people from those seasons have had the most success, too.

Leona's year was actually quite poor. Apart from her there was no-one interesting. The best ever season was 7: Matt, Aiden, Paije, Treyc, Rebecca, Cher, Katie, Wagner, One Direction and even Tesco Mary.

Absolutely agree with this. Never really got the rave reviews series 7 got. It was the most manipulated series ever and the one that made even those in denial realize we were all being cheated.
Cowell and Cole were insufferable in their smugness and their obsessive, overhyping of Cher as the person who single handedly invented urban music was nauseating in the extreme.
I wasn't a fan of Tesco Mary but did that woman get screwed over to save the chosen one?

Tesco Mary is imo one of the best singers X Factor has ever had. As standalone performances, her first three live performances are up there with some of the best ever on the show. But I think shes very underrated because she was never going to make it big afterwards in the way that Rebecca or One Direction would.

Series 7 had nothing to do with the show's decline IMO; if it had the audition stages of Series 8 would have taken a hit but they didn't - they were as healthy as the year before.

The first misstep occurred at the end of the auditions of series 8 where they elected to show Ceri as the last audition which left a sour taste in many people's mouths. They then spent the first section of bootcamp showing Frankie trying to sleep with every female contestant followed by a callous cut that, for some bizarre reason, they echoed this year - though boot camp actually saw a boost in series 9. Judges Houses followed with a few unpopular decisions, such as sending Frankie through ahead of more popular acts; the mishandling of the Goldie situation and the manufacturing of three of the four groups put through to the live shows.

Once the lives arrived the mistakes kept coming. They decided that the public didn't even need a say for week one, and one of the most popular acts at the time - Amelia - was unceremoniously dumped over weaker acts in other categories. Kitty was built up as a huge diva yet was one of the strongest performers in the live shows, leaving the producers in a horrible dilemma where their early edit cost them dear when it came to the public vote. Misha B was 'outed' as a bully without having much chance to defend herself which led to Kelly missing the next show and being replaced by the international superstar that is Alexandra Burke.

Janet and Craig were both talented but struggled with uptempo songs and Johnny was twisted into a joke act just so the show could have one, completely overlooking his ability. Frankie became less interested and more intoxicated as the series went on leading to the desperate double eviction where they hoped he'd fall into the bottom three only for them to lose The Risk, who had a member change halfway through the series, and Johnny as they attempted belatedly to redeem Kitty.

Instead they pulled Frankie over an issue which they presumably knew about before week 5 (considering he seemed out of it during his week 5 performance) and finally hit gold - to an extent - with the wildcard choice which led to Amelia's return. This gave some momentum to the latter half of the series and it managed to limp home at Christmas.

The original damage, in my mind, was done in series 8 for the reasons above. The problems in series 9 stem from a lack of action with the Simon seat on the panel and an dreadfully edited audition stage which practically stripped all of the fun out of it. Why the felt the need to mess around with the auditions when they've performed fine over the past few years is anyone's guess but, after a poor start due to the hangover from 2011, it was never going to gain momentum and therefore the show is stuck where it is now.

I loved Series 1 until the final between the only two acts I didn't like Rowetta should have won!
Series 2 was a solid effort...not sure Nicholas was a potential winner but there were a air ew...not my favourites The Conway Sisters though (Not sure they'd have such a bad rep had Louis not saved them over Maria...)
I enjoyed Series 3 as I had two favourites (Eton Road and Nikitta) plus it launched Leona, though I've never been ,massively interested in her as an artist.
Series 4 had the worst final result ever (Hated Steve too but Rhyd was my avourite whereas I didn't like G4) but I watched this series avidly as it was the one I auditioned for...remember me, Lady Shiverz? (Haha not really...did meet her though and it explains why she was so quiet!)
Series 5 was excellent - everyone was at the very least passable (Diana took some getting used to for me but I liked her performance o Call Me and I'm a fan of her post-XF single The Boy Who Murdered Love) - Alexandra's been successful as far as XF winners go, and JLS have had amazing success. Seen them both live - very impressive! JLS were my favourites but Alex puts on a great show too!
Enjoyed Series 6, though it reminds me of the horrible place I was living in at the time lol! Was disappointed to see Rikki leave early but was delighted with the eventual winner Joe, who has done well despite Cowell! Liked most of the other acts though got very frustrated by Lloyd's popularity!
For me, Series 7 was actually the worst series - not because of the manipulation as I was always aware of that, especially after participating myself, but because for me, the acts were either terrible or good but nothing to write home about. Didn't have a favourite (did but he was eliminated at top 100, Hollie Burns) and couldn't bear Rebecca's voice, still can't lol...didn't get the hype around Aiden either.
I enjoyed Series 8, went to watch boot camp live, the novelty act Johnny could actually sing and I was pleasantly surprised by Little Mix's win. Frankie's exit won't have been scripted, though Amelia's return may have been.
Series 9 is watchable but I supported Carolynne and when she left switched to Melanie...so wasn't impressed with the results...Rylan's the worst joke act they've had IMO as his performances just aren't very entertaining! Some acts are reasonable but unoriginal, others aren't grat but no one's popularity is winding me up in the way tytht Rebecca's or Lloyd's did (thought that was going to be MK1's role!) The judges have no chemistry but I only really care about the judges when it's The Voice and even then it's only Danny lol

I think Simon leaving had a big part too. Gary is a poor man's Simon.
