It's overdone. Boring. Every year now since 2009 they've had the typical joke act. Jedward, Wagner/Katie, Frankie/Johnny. The acts that have subpar vocals, yet are put through against the odds because they are "entertaining" apparantly. They get huge production numbers, over the top dancers, camp songs etc... Year in year out, the joke acts survive for a few weeks knocking out superior singers until they final get voted off around week 6 (usually after the "huge shocker" elimination of the season on week 5. There's the usual public outcry, the media focus etc...

Yet there's none of that this year, why? Rylan is just that step too far. People have stopped caring. They're too jaded by it. Rylan isn't entertaining, he's exhausting. No different to the usual TOWIE rubbish personality wise. And as far as controversy goes, Wagner and Frankie beat him soundly.

He isn't even unlikeable enough to be a hate figure. I'm just indifferent to his performances because I know he's going to be there for a few more weeks yet. Whatever. I just fast forward through his songs. The joke thing has been done better in past years. It's time they put it away. I knew back on week 1 as soon as he was in the bottom 2 that they would save him. In fact if they wanted to really take me by surprise they would have sent Rylan home that week.

Agreed

Novelty acts work when they're a novelty, not when there's one every year

And they need to have a voice. Chico and Wagner were very good singers. Jedward were passable. Rylan cannot sing a note.

Strange point you're making - the kerfuffle when Carolynne went was as widely reported as anything happening in relation to X Factor has been for a while. And if people were merely jaded about Rylan and weren't finding him entertaining, he'd have been bottom of the poll in the past two weeks. There isn't even a "vote-for-the-worst" style campaign going on to keep him around, as there began to be for Wagner.

It's obvious, really. The voting public just prefers him to the contestants who have left. As well they might, I say, though I'd rather Melanie had stayed around for longer.

Not that strange. Sure there was kerfuffle on here as there is every week and in the papers the next morning, but that died down rapidly in about 3 days. There is an anti vote, and there's a silly teenage vote for Rylan too. But he still polled bottom on the first week. And if you look at the voting trends for previous years you'll see that the joke acts were always either in the bottom 2 or they escaped it by the skin of their teeth every week.

Rylan singing reminds me of the time Les Dawson or Eric Morcambe used to play the piano. The proper notes but not necessary in the right order!

Agree with the OP. I think most of us have pretty much accepted that Rylan will survive for a few weeks until the producers ultimately deem it too embarrassing for his presence to continue. At that point we can expect the predictable lack of production, uninspired song choice, unmemorable judges' response and perhaps even a double elimination to get rid of him.

In other words, either Rylan's doing better than previous "joke acts" since the first week when his fans were probably too complacent - nobody was predicting an early exit for him - or he too is escaping the bottom 2 each week by the skin of his teeth, and nothing much has changed at all, so after all the public hasn't grown any more fed up with the "joke" than it's always been.

He's doing as well as Frankie in the voting sense so far, but the voting public and the viewing public are very different. At this stage last year Frankie was causing a huge ruckus all over the internet and the papers and chat on Facebook and Twitter. People were talking about him and paying attention. For the most case the only time Rylan generates discussion is during the 10 minute interval that he is featured in on tv every Saturday and immediately after he is saved on Sunday. People just don't care like they did with other joke contestants.

I'd better take your word for it then... I'm barely on Facebook, not on Twitter and the only newspaper I read wouldn't have anything to say about XF unless the studio blew up. I certainly had the impression that Rylan and Lucy's night out was generating some attention... Frankie did rather earn his popular infamy by making a habit of being seen falling out of clubs with a succession of girls. Probably the world isn't ready for images of Rylan staggering out of clubs with a succession of guys

they will make him sing a slow ballad then critisize him for not being fun

Strange thread seeing as Rylan will be performing at Week 4 this weekend. So I don't really believe what you are saying OP. People do still care for these acts.

Did people ever really care?

Look at the voting percentages for Jedward and Wagner. They were low all the way through. They may generate the most publicity but the public aren't really interested or voting for them.

Actually OP some people do care about joke acts. Rylan wouldn't still be in it if they didn't.

Perhaps you should have said some people don't care about joke acts any more.

I know what you mean. Chico and Wagner could at least sing a bit and carry a tune Jedward were actually funny. Even Katie had a voice somewhere in there, Kitty could sing and perform very well - even Johnny could sing
Rylan is not entertaining, he can't sing! He talks his way through songs.

I don't see how Rylan is a step too far, when he's better than most of the "joke" acts that have been on in previous seasons. I think he has an actual fan base who are voting for him because they like him, not random people voting just because they think it would be funny to keep him in.

And I wouldn't call Kitty (OP put Katie, but I assume they meant Kitty) as a joke act.

Rylan is slightly different in that not only cant he sing, but he cant do the other stuff to compensate either.

jedward were at least the ones doing the jumping around and dancing, Wagner had his bongos, Rylan just walks around the stage, its the dancers that add the 'entertainment' if you want to call it that to his performances, he doesnt even do that himself.

They are desperately trying to create a rylan v barlow story , but I think the OP is right, and people just dont care. The vote for the worst brigade are backing him, and probably the towie fans, but I dont think the majority of viewers seem particularly bothered either way, he certainly doesnt get the boos etc like previous 'taking the talents spot' acts have gone through.

I've said it in a few threads over the last few days but I truly believe Jedward occured completely by accident, but they grasped the opportunity with both hands and ran with it. It just happened to be successful and viewers really caught on to it.

They tried it again with Wagner the following year and he became the anti-X Factor figure, again it worked. He was also brought in as a wildcard so didn't appear to steal the place of anyone else. But I believe it was supposed to be Shirlena that year.

They were pushing their luck with Goldie, who eventually pulled out but the great thing about the three of them is that they didn't know they were awful yet somehow entertaining, whereas Rylan knows he's rubbish. The week 1 result also screamed fix because we've seen that happen before.

This is the biggest issue about the last 2 years. They're trying to recreate stories that have happened before rather than letting the show evolve naturally. Bigger and better stories would occur if they stopped scripting it so much, it's the nature of the show.

Johnny was made to look like the joke act but he could actually sing.

I wonder what would happen once Rylan is kicked out, would the ratings go up a bit, and people would stop complaining about controversial decisions?

and believe me a good pianist trying to play the wrong notes that well (if you see where I'm coming from) is extremely hard.

The temptation to correct yourself and play the right notes is really strong.

So in effect, you have to be really good at what you do to get it so horribly wrong LOL!

I think we'll see voting figures at an all time low this series and there's probably very very little in it.

The difference with Wagner/Jedward is that they never really believed they could sing and didn't really have much ambition, and they were fairly harmless. Whereas Rylan believes he can sing and is using the show to catapult himself into TOWIE or something similar.

Well, I think they all would like to catapult themselves into some form of entertainment (and I use that word loosely when thinking of TOWIE). Surely that's why they go on the show?

Although I am not a huge Rylan fan, if indeed I'm a fan at all, you can't blame him or anyone else from exploring all avenues at a shot of 'fame.' It's not unique to Rylan imo.

Johnny gave me the creeps - I always fast forwarded it as soon as he came on.

Well this obviously isn't true because Rylan is in week 4 now. So obviously some people do care enough to vote and use their own money on him!.
