Because I don't think self reporting of sexuality is reliable, and some level of gut feeling that the number is higher than 1.5%. As has been shown in this thread, people lie on those surveys (I wouldn't, as it happens). 5% would be the very highest I would suggest is reasonable. 3% is probably more likely.
The surveys go to great lengths to mitigate against people being shy to give an answer and are designed with that in mind. 3% is around the figure for younger people in these surveys and in big cities. I think some people's insistence that figures around 1.5% can't be right stems from the fact they're young and urban themselves and forget the rest of the nation isn't like their little bit of it. That said even living in London myself i'm not naive enough to think the percentage here is 5%-10%. I believe it's what the UK surveys say it is; around 2.5% in the capital..

Saw JLS's JB Gill yesterday on The Wright Show and thought he came across as a bit camp.
"Merry Christmas!"

Why did you lie in the survey?
For the reasons stated in my post. The methodology used by the ONS, and all other SURVEYS, on this matter, are laughable.

I'd actually be interested to see what a survey would say the percentage is for where I live (Newark), because personally it always seems higher than you would expect, although I doubt it really is.

What is the methodology? If it was a face-to-face interview, or even a telephone interview, albeit anonymous, I might well feel inclined to give less than 100% honest answers to personal questions, due to embarrassment.

But if it was, say, a paper form I think I'd feel "safe" enough to be entirely truthful, no matter what was being asked.

Dunno if he's been mentioned on here before, but there is a Premier League footballer who spends most of his time out on loan. He owns his own house in West London, which apparently, according to him has stunning views, which he shares with his dog Millie. He's quite well educated, plays violin, piano and guitar.

He's previously while on loan in the championship been targeted for homophobic abuse.

His Instagram also shows him being very excited about a picture of him with Niall Horan from one direction.

Could be nothing, but is kind of curious...

It was almost taken as read that JB from JLS was gay, but then he got married and had a kid

He's nowhere near enough of a fame whore to be going down the bearding route imo

Have heard him speak a few times and it's as obvious as it was with Tom Daley

Neither Cahill or Ivanovic have been on loan recently..

I thought it was pretty clear, but if you're struggling, just think of the website PhotoBucket.

Well he certainly pinged when I saw him, but I did wonder if it was just wishful thinking..

I don't know much about the young man in question but it does seem a lot like the Graeme LeSaux situation - educated, articulate and well-spoken, doesn't spend all his free time twatting about on Facebook or taking advantage of stupid drunken girls in nightclubs..... can't be a Proper Bloke, can he?

Mind you, the same could be said of Thomas Hitzlsperger, and he actually did turn out to be gay....

Follow beard_club on twitter lots of revelations there

why do people bother - the lengths people go to appear hetrosexual

regarding these 2.5% - the true figure is much much higher if you believe everything coming out of celeb-land

It was a combination of telephone and doorstep interviews. I mean what was the point?

No they're not. They are trialled and tested and have been used for years with built in mechanisms to encourage people to feel safe to answer honestly. But if people are determined to lie to them then there's not much else they can do, is there? The irony is hearing someone say the studies can't be reliable when they themselves misled those doing the survey - and for no good reason, as far as we can see.

Indeed very interesting. It makes you wonder what the figures will be in 30 years time when hopefully not being straight will be as controversial and stigmatised as being left handed.

Massive assumption on my part but I saw the one direction love and the cute dog and connected the dots..

Not that a heterosexual guy can't love one direction and cute dogs of course..

Why all this cloak and dagger nonsense? You can just say the name, you know... It would save a lot of time on all sides

I wouldn't say the Chelsea player's voice is just 'well spoken', it's also very effeminate, though that's not definitive proof of someone being gay

That beard_club Twitter is absolutely absurd

Is there any celebrity couple who they don't think are gay?

I was enjoying it until they suggested that Courtney Cox and Jen Aniston are a lesbian couple, and Frank Lampard and Christine Bleakley are both gay

Ludicrous
