He was very publicly out for years (even doing magazine interviews talking about how important it was for him as a gay man to be out) then closeted and bearded up when Hollywood came calling. Might have popped out again since.

There's that too, he seems fairly comfortable with male attention, which could just be confidence in his own heterosexuality.
He tends to be the more LGBT friendly member of 1D but again it doesn't really mean anything.
Personally, I want Niall presented to me in nothing but a bow for Christmas.
