I can think of 6 out female singers:

Joan Jett, who is not massively relevant any more
k d lang, ditto
Melissa Etheridge, who is a bit niche
Cheryl Wright, who is even more niche than Etheridge
Belinda O Hooley & Heidi Tidow, who are married to each other and even more niche than the two above.

Women are still struggling to get the basic rights, powers and respect that men take for granted in a general sense, so it's no surprise that lgbt progress for women is behind that of men.

Are there any out gymnasts yet (that are currently competing)?

We've got SOAK and the lead singer from Pvris, who both identify as homosexual as far as I'm aware. They've both got critical acclaim from all the right places, but neither are the most commercial of artists.

SOAK gets play on radio 1 that's pretty mainstream..

I think the sad reality is that boybands, especially young ones still rely on teenage girls as a big part of their fanbase so people are reluctant to come out incase it impacts their career.

The ones listed above I would assume don't have that demographic as a major part of their fans.

Troye Sivian and Years & Years both have massive teenage girl followings.

Tegan and Sara, both of whom are out, had a bit of success with their last album and radio playlisting as well. But I'm still not sure either of these count as mainstream in the way that the likes of Sam Smith, Years and Years and Will Young do.

There is one who I've just thought of, actually: Jess Glynne. Mainstream AND out. But she's still a fairly rare exception to the rule.

I'm not sure it does have any negative impact now. I think a lot of teenage girls love gay boys in bands. Their minds go wild with all this "shipping" stuff.

Steve posts a lot of shit. I've worked with 1D and I truly believe Zayn and Liam are 100% straight. I always got a gay vibe from Louis and I do think Harry is pansexual (infact I'm pretty much damn sure of it) and I wouldn't be surprised if he confirms it eventually but Louis will be in the closet for as long as he is with Cowell. I do think its very telling Harry has got as far away from Syco as he could since 1D ended. He has cut all ties with Simon Cowell. I think I said it on here before but Harry was by far the most intelligent and mature member of the group.

She's still giving it the whole "I don't want to label my sexuality" nonsense though. Not that I think any of that would have an impact on her record sales, and fair play to her for speaking so honestly about her album being written about a relationship with a lady. But in terms of "out females", she does fit the bill you're right.

I think female sexuality has become more fluid than male sexuality, to be honest. We've got people like Miley Cyrus being quite open and free with their sexuality (whether that's a publicity stunt or her being genuine, who knows) and other well known figures like Cara DeLavigne and that woman from Geordie Shore recently coming out as bisexual. There isn't the direct success stories like Sam Smith and Years & Years but from a female perspective, the figures are still there if you look for them.

A bit "who?" now, but doesn't the lady from La Roux identify as a lesbian?

Latifah has never come out.

I dont think Joan Armatrading ever came out either.

And Elly Jackson said something similar to Jess Glynn, IIRC.

You're forgetting that in the public conciousness you are whatever sexuality fits your current partner

It can't be having a good effect on them for their future though.

Teenage girls being infatuated with popstars, only for them to come out and break their hearts. Or the girls who obsess over gay guys on Youtube & Tumblr just because they find them attractive - it's gonna give them unrealistic expectations for their own lives.
