Why is saying "I don't want to label my sexuality" nonsense? Maybe Jess is just being honest. Maybe she's not sure exactly what label would fit her. I see no problem with that when she's totally open about dating women and doesn't seem insecure about it, that's what matters.
Still, it would definitely be nice to have a mainstream female who was out as lesbian and acted proud of it, someone where their sexuality was incorporated as part of their image.
There have been some out female singers mentioned here, none of them are really mainstream and definitely none of them are "pop stars". The only thing we have are out bisexual women, like Miley Cyrus, but their relationships with women have been far fewer and shorter than with men, or kept totally hidden.
Alison Goldfrapp's in a relationship with a woman now too (although I think she's bisexual rather than lesbian).

The earlier Youtube people did it for the fun and because they were pretty geeky - I'd say that Charlie earned his Stephen Fry outtro

It was a flippant comment - I don't truly think it is nonsense, but in the context of this thread it's a bit of a flimsy offering. I mean that in relation to an LGBT popstar, not questioning Jess' success.

Phil has been about for ages so I'd class him as someone doing it for the fun, it's just that companies have realised his and Dan's appeal to young girls and they're taking advantage of this to make as much money with them as they can.

It started out as for fun, but those two are very savvy.

A quick scroll through his Twitter, it doesn't seem like he was keeping his sexuality very well hidden. I don't think it's really possible to 'out' this guy to be fair.
Plus, if you really don't want people knowing you're gay/bi/whatever, you could always not date Sam Smith, one of the most famous openly gay celebrities in the world right now.
Someone who sucks the life and soul out of everything he sings? I thought the Ministry Of Magic outlawed having a relationship with Dementors.
