I think it's more due to non gender-conforming behaviour, which a lot children who eventually grow up to be gay display, such as playing with dolls or other girls for example. Due to spending time with other girls, and a lot of time with their mothers, they adopt speech patterns and habits that are usually more common of females when they are growing and developing, and as a result they retain these habits when they become adult males. I remember reading about it somewhere online a while ago. It's not a physical cause, more a social/behavioural one. It was very interesting actually.
