When it isn't really relevant to the interview, then yes it is.

I imagine that there isn't anything defaming anyone's character if you say you think they are gay whereas some of the blind items are accusing people of illegal activities or ones which are morally dubious. So whilst people may not want to be seen as gay for whatever silly reason it isn't really hurting them to be speculated about. I'm probably wrong but that's my guess.

People can give it the whole 'you're just being stereotypical' all they like, but these same people knew Alan Carr was gay the first time they heard him speak

There's a BIG difference about knowing (or rather assuming) someone's gay from their manner and pointing out ridiculous stereotypical traits which "must" make them gay (e.g. Overbearing mother) though.

Nor mine. My gay brother is younger than me, my schizophrenic brother is older. My mother was not overbearing, our father wasn't absent or ineffectual, my brother (who is also one of my best friends) doesn't lisp or is camp and I don't think anyone (except other gays) would realise he was gay.

Let's face it, we still have very little idea why most people are predominantly straight, why some are predominantly gay and why some are bisexual. The problem is as much political in that, for many reasons, loads of people wouldn't like there to be a 'genetic' explanation for gayness.

There is some evidence that the children of older mothers and younger members of the family have a greater likelihood of being gay, but that is purely statistical (and conclusions take from statistics can be wildly uninformative and odd) so take that with a pinch of salt, too.

And how do we explain twins, such as the Krays, where one is gay and the other isn't?

I suspect despite the Western world lightening up a little on gays, it will be quite some time yet before threads like this simply do not exist in the sense that threads on 'What cheese is the Moon made of?' also don't exist. The real problem is the terrible, horrible treatment gays still get in many Asian countries, Africa and Russia. Until that ends, there is a long way to go. A long, long way.
