Well i've had an eclectic mix of shows tonight

1900 Hollyoaks (E4)
2000 Arrow (Sky1)
2100 IAC (ITV1)
2200 Girls (Sky Atlantic)
2250 Full English (Ch4)

Full English being the biggest pile of crap i've ever seen and weirdly Hollyoaks being the best of tonights bunch. Hopefully it does well this week

BBC Scotland did exactly that after River City when it through a similar rating/production issues, now a one hour weekly show and its ratings have stabilised.

Well I think it would generally be two 60 minute shows rather than four 30 minute shows which replaced EE if it came to that, and then ideally as least one of those slots would be for shorter returning series rather than another weekly serial, so it would be costly as you are bound to go through a few flops to find the shows that work.

Sadly though it's not going to happen as there seems little desire to find longer running returning series in the 9pm hour, never mind earlier in the evening. We seem to be getting more 3-4 part commissions than ever despite shows like Downton showing how a good drama can claim a slot for iitself for weeks. Indeed IMO now you think Sunday night drama and you think of Downton, despite it only being in the slot eight weeks of the year.

World In Action was produced by Granada, which retained its franchise. "Death on the Rock" was an edition of "This Week". And it was broadcast in 1988. Other than that, you're doing fine.

Perhaps an Earthquake on Albert Square and tidal wave by sending some of the cast on a Thames cruise? It worked for Sunset Beach's ratings and increased them, even though it was still the bottom rated soap in America. Even Home and Away had some characters on a cruise hit by a freak storm to boost ratings.

Maybe EE, Hebburn and other flops need a SuBe style thing like that to kill some characters off, pull their ratings up and get publicity.

Be interesting to see how the tennis does on BBC3 - wasn't really anything of note on BBC2 that couldn't have been postponed tonight.

how difficult is it to get a tv show commisioned?

I imagine if they got rid of dinosaur shows like eastenders quicker and actually had a bigger turnover of shows, then you'd get a much higher quality of t.v., with more groundbreaking and edgy stuff etc.

although i've heard that the industry is incredibly competitive, with perhaps 2,000 ideas for everyone that gets to the implementation stage.

I want to like Full English, simply because its good to see a UK cartoon in a similar mould to Family Guy, it does however have many problems

1) Richard Ayoade cant do voice work, and sounds too much like Moss, Moss voice coming out of a depressed middle aged white guy did not work at all

2) far too much Britians Got Talent, the show may have poked some gentle fun at it, but watching Full English was too much like watching BGT for my taste.

Full English needed to stand on its own characters, and storylines, not borrow from Simon Cowell.

3) the family does not seem to work, the posh brother, does not seem to fit the family at all. Makes the family seem disjointed, but without him the family would work better.

4) the single best moment, is the father in law, running out on Hitler, but it leads to question about this age, and why he is wanting to have sex with a Queen.

I could continue but I wont.


can I just objected very strongly, to these ideas that EastEnders borrow from US soaps, and worse Sunset Beach.

Should EE want to get rid of alot of character fast, it will find a more subtle and realistic way to do it, without resorting to plot lines from Sunset Beach.

Such storylines will only hurt the shows creditability further and wont help the incoming characters, which is where the effort needs to be, not in fancy (but stupid) ways to get rid of the cast.

but seriously I would think its very hard to get a commission, and to pretend that axing EastEnders will quickly lead to a bunch of exciting new shows, is absurd for the reasons ive talked about all ready in this thread.

If EastEnders ratings gets worse, then fine axe it, but dont be surprised if you dont get half as much money to play with as you thought you would get, and 2 hours of prime-time to fill, 52 weeks a year.

I've not heard one good word about Full English. It was commissioned by Shane Allen who is joining the BBC as Head Of Comedy!

It timeshifts very well these days anyway.

I think next week we see the run up to christmas starting and this will get some old viewers tuning in.

"Dangerous opponent" Sam Boo has a MMA record of 5 wins 7 losses, so they've presumably been looking hard for someone 37 year old (ancient in MMA terms) Reid has a chance with. I hope Boo wins. It'll be funny. All hail BAMMA!

Perhaps EastEnders should air twice a week for an hour.

Drop the Friday ep, keep Monday and Thursday perhaps.

But when you have a lower overnight it'll never timeshift enough to bring up to 8/9m levels, and even when it does it's still down on what it should be for this time of year.
