Blankety Blank was BBC, though it did have the look of an ITV show, which confused people. I think The Price Is Right could be a success, but please no celebs this time.

Yes, it needs to move from that slot if it's to recover. Wednesday at 8pm ? Post Corrie, and away from Emmerdale ?
Oh and Daybreak needs time, it takes a long time to change audience habits. Fincham said as much.

Are they joking? Whenever I read these pages, it's 99.9% dominated by posters either patting each other on the back for itv's overnights or concern for itv shows - just look at all this concern for Daybreak.

There is definately a gap in the market now for a real alternative at breakfast time, though whether ITV could fill that even with a brand like The Big Breakfast I'm not sure. They'd probably attempt to make it too mainstream and take away what made it work - though I'd trust ITV more than Jay Hunt at the moment with it.
ITV could surely solve their problems by just giving up the franchise - it's no longer the cash cow it was now and perhaps it needs an outsider to come in and make it work. Of course though that won't happen as though it's a burden for ITV now they'd rather have that burden than risk someone else having success in the slot.

It's concern for Daybreak / concern for itv's breakfast slot in general - as if it's a God given right that itv MUST have a successful show then.

True. Most of the regulars are massive ITV fans and make no bones about that fact, so in the interest of balance it's only right that the other contingent is vocal as well with their various counterarguments.
This ITV bashing term is overused and seems to be born out of paranoia. Nobody bashes ITV for the sake of it, but as a leading commercial broadcaster certain things are expected, and in a thread devoted to ratings performance, it would be a travesty if questions weren't asked when they fail to meet those expectations, irrespective of personal viewing preferences.

Last year the start date was confirmed as 13 November on 31 October and the line-up was officially announced on 9 November.

I agree with your point if you are a commercial broadcaster.
But if EastEnders has a consolidated figure of 8m and Corrie a consolidated figure of 9m, then Corrie is more popular. I think the consolidated figures are still relevant when it comes to concluding the most watched programmes.
I've just watched Michael Palin's Brazil on my Sky Plus (and supporting RobbieSykes assertion that overnights are increasingky irrelevant, I don't regard myself as any less of a viewer of MPB just because I didn't watch it before 2am on Thursday morning.
I think the reason it didn't do brilliantly in the ratings was a case of "been there, done that, bought the t-shirt" even though Michael hasn't been there (hence the programme).
One reason suggested for Call The Midwife storming the ratings was because it was something new and fresh for television. That also applied to Around The World In Eighty Days when it was screened 25 years ago. Since then we've had a quite a few Palin travelogues so it now seems a bit old hat. Also Around The World, Pole To Pole and Full Circle had a epic quality because of the amount of travelling involved. Even smaller journeys like Himalaya and New Europe covered several countries. Restricting the programme to one country means it seem a bit more ordinary, a bit more BBC2.
But I'm glad to see something like this on primetime BBC1. I sometimes feel I'd like to see a few of BBC2's "see the world" programmes on BBC1. Something a bit more adventurous on the main channel.
4.8m overnights translating to about 5.5m comsolidated is not too bad these days, And he did beat the ITV safe option detective drama. I think , though, ratings may tale off and MPB will lose to DCI Banks next week (just).

I personally think all figures should be included, and here's why.
If there was no EastEnders on BBC3, more people would make a conscious effort to watch the first showing on BBC1 or record and watch it at their own leisure which would show up in the consolidated figures.
Spin-off channels and +1 channels are a way of people timeshifting their viewing without actually having to record the programme.
I watch very little TV live, and record my favourite programmes using a range of repeats due to clashes on my PVR.
I agree with Robbie, for once, that overnights are becoming less relevant due to the number of recording devices, repeats on +1 channels and digital channels.
