The most recent movie in that week on Channel 5 that I can see is An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving (2008) and that's on the Thursday afternoon. Some big older films though.

Surely the majority of people who want to watch the Inbetweeners will have got it on DVD last christmas? I remember Twilight doing poorly this time last year I think, and that is with its strong fanbase.

When Inbetweeneres series 3 was on, that was its premiere, people hadn't seen it in cinemas or got it on DVD, so the 4m+ viewers it was getting may not all watch it next week. 3m+ is a possibiity considering what ITV1 and BBC1 are showing on a Thursday, but I wouldn't be shocked if it was below 2.5m either

You could say the same about every time Channel 4 trot out a Peter Kay stand up. Most people have each of his stand ups on multiple DVDs!

I wonder if GeorgeS might be busy reevaluating his self-imposed relocation to the broadcasting subforum, in an attempt to distance himself from the "kids", "trolls" and "loners" that apparently frequent this thread.

Somewhat hilariously, the ITV ratings crisis thread has now been followed up by not one but two BBC ratings crisis threads, I kid you not.

This thread offers Question Time standard debate in comparison to the lousy fanboy war that now prevails over there.

It's a bit of a joke, though - is it actually worth calling it News at Ten any more? One of the reasons it does poorly in the ratings is that its slot changes too readily.

The start of yet another Clint Eastwood season, bringing an end to the run of premieres on Sundays.

Slightly annoying that as the ratings were picking up nicely for the premieres. I wanted to see if The Expendables could close the gap on Homeland.

The Chase got an even higher rating on Wednesday 31st October 2012 of 3.24m (22.1%) , +1: 230k = 3.47m/23.7% (inc +1), which I believe is its best ever rating in that slot.

It's always difficult to predict with hit movies - often if they've done well at the cinema and on DVD their fans have seen them, so the TV premiere isn't really an event for them. It could be sum 2m, it could be 3m+ - but I still feel they should have let E4 have the premiere as I think relatively speaking it would have performed excellently for them.

They'll work it around Christmas just as they work every other drama/comedy they begin with less than six weeks to go - just move it to another night.

Every year people here wonder how they'll schedule series to finish before Christmas despite every year the BBC having series which run into the Christmas period (and often New Year), rescheduled as necessary (and every year me pointing that out). I think we generally put it down to the usual lack of common sense in the scheduling department, but thinking about it with less and less special programming over the festive week the BBC actually need to continue to run some series into the period just to fill some of the dead nights.

Small nugget of info from a Sky News press release - Hurricane Sandy saw the channel achieve its highest audience since the riots last Summer, which saw it achieve its highest ever daily share. Presumably big boosts for the BBC NC as well.

Something which completely passed me by but Countdown is being pushed to an even earlier slot a week on Monday, moving to 2.40pm to make way for a new Sandi Toksvig fronted quiz at 3.30pm. I believe it's been recommissioned for a couple of years but it's no surprise that everytime Countdown is moved to an earlier slot it loses viewers - indeed if they knocked 15 minutes off Deal or No Deal again they could air Countdown at 3pm, the new quiz at 3.45pm then Deal back at 4.15pm, which would mean Countdown shares a common junction with BBC1 and ITV1 at least, which surely would help it.

Homefront was developed for ITV as an original series by Sue Teddern (Birds Of A Feather) and Jan McVerry (Coronation Street) for Keiron Roberts (Coronation Street/ITV Manchester).

It has nothing to do with Army Wives - nor with Shed Productions' Bombshell, made for ITV but never to be screened.

In other words, three drama series - which in essence draw on the same basic premise ...

I just find it hilariously ironic he said that about this thread when a) he was one of the instigators of the whole channel bias arguments and b) the "ITV ratings crises" thread has way more kids, trolls and loners in that thread than here.

He's never been the same since that rating for the Olympic Opening Ceremony, the Olympics finished him off...

Thank you very much. Last one: how did ITV1/STV do up in Scotland in that slot? The UK-wide rating for DCI Banks (which did air on STV) was 4.13m (18.0%) exc +1. I'm guessing with stronger BBC One + Two competition, the third channel in Scotland was squeezed. (The combined share for One and Two was 34.4% in Scotland but just 24.8% across the UK as a whole.)

Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris and Miranda Hart are all big, mainstream names.

Call The Midwife is a much easier sell without any star names though. Period dramas on BBC1 nearly always bring in the viewers, it's the safest genre to bring in viewers apart from bog standard cop shows. There's a lot less need to have a big name to sell it than a spy drama which is a genre that hasn't really attracted a mainstream following outside of Spooks.

Launching a drama outside that of detective and period dramas without any biggish names to help bring viewers in is always going to be tough. Hunted didn't start very high, overnights of under 4,5m, IIRC. Regardless of whether the show is any good or not, that was a relatively low start for such a well-trailed show, something I would put down to the lack of name recognition.

Comparing the audience totals by demo for the Channel 4 Simpsons episode on Wed 31 Oct with the one on Tuesday 30 Oct:

Men 16-34: down -20%
Adults 16+: down -26%
All individuals: down -34%
Women 16-34: down -45%
Housewives with Children: down -49%
Children 4-15: down -51% (skew down from 30% to 22%)

It bounced back strongly on Thursday, however, from 1.03m to 1.70m inc +1, the highest in a while. Withdrawal symptoms, perhaps.

I agree, much better class of FM to argue with.

I have made a fair few robust criticisms of EE ratings and enjoyed the spirted defence of its performance from its champions here on DS Ratings Thread.

In fairness to George, I think the Jubilee and Euro 2012 left him with little stomach for the fight. And the Olympic ratings seemed to knock the wind out of rzt's sails as he has only recently returned to act as Notes and Corrections editor in chief to my various BBC-biased broad-brush ratings assumptions (see Palin).

I don't think the Ratings Thread archive shows a single comment from rzt on the Olympics ratings.
