When Fight Club first came out, I listened a bit too much to the critics who just saw it as a film about fighting and macho posturing. Eventually I got to watch it one day, and since then I take all what critics say with a pinch of salt... or at least more so.

Despicable Me. I wasn't expecting this to be any good as it had come from an animation studio without much history behind it. But it was hilarious and much better than I expected. I'd rate it closely behind the Incredibles which is my fav animated film by far.

In Bruges.
I expected nothing as I knew nothing and heard nothing about it. It's one of my favourite films ever, excellent acting and superb storyline. Emotional!

50/50 - Flew pretty much under the radar this one, but turned out to be a wonderful film.

Some films that surprised me:
Much better than I expected Accidental Hero (1992) The Hot Rock (1972) Hombre (1967) - I know it's regarded as a great film, but I'm not really into Westerns, so didn't think I would enjoy it. Disappointingly mediocre Now, Voyager (1942) - didn't like it, although I think Bette Davis did her best work in this film Romeo + Juliet (1996) - love Shakespeare adaptations, and some modern ones are great. This is not one of them. |

Million Dollar Baby .
Boxing movies do little for me , and I wasn't interested in women boxing at all . But -- my god ! that film delivers a real sucker punch , I was completely unready for it and what followed . fantastic score too . |

Same here. I don't know if it's classed as a British film but we should make more films like that instead of the crap low budget comedies starting sitcom actors.

The Last Seduction. I had never heard of that film until it got its first UK TV showing on Channel 4 in around 1997. I recorded it just on a whim. Wow. What a good story and of course Linda Fiorentino as Bridget Gregory was standout. Amazing.
Fight Club. I had heard a lot of hype about it and actually sort of knew part of the ending, but when I watched it on BBC TV I was blown away by it. Superb. |

Blade Runner - I never enjoyed Sci-Fi so thought I would hate it. I didn't. I loved it and its forever changed my opinion on the genre.

Even after seeing it the first time I wasn't at all impressed by 'Apocalypto'.
I'm not sure what happened but I watched it recently on TV and I was totally blown away. |

Identity.
I expected a regular, run of the mill slasher movie. I really didn't expect how it turned out!

Kick-Ass, wasn't expecting much but it's a film I return to on a regular basis. Dammit even Nicolas Cage was brilliant. Finger crossed for the sequel.

So gritty and so very British! It's great when you find a film that moves you when you weren't expecting anything. Good thread idea OP. |
