I don't know how to explain it. I've felt like this ever since the year Leon won.. You'd have auditions/boot camp/judges house where you could clearly see most of the people who got through there were at least good talents. To take this series as a case in point, I liked most of the contestants who got to judges houses (except for Rylan) and now suddenly, everybody is just CRAP. Jahmene and Ella are the best singers but their live performances don't connect, they don't own the stage and I find myself switching off. Union J and District 3, you can barely hear their vocals anymore. It feels like they can barely hear themselves over the loudass backing track, let alone us hear them from home. Jade sings through her nose and thinks strutting around looking sexy is enough. Christopher, James and Kye are just wet towels and who am I forgetting? If I'm forgetting anyone that just proves my point.

edit: Oh Lucy and Rylan, the two joke acts. They speak for themselves.

Why do the live shows RUIN the acts? Is it a case of just peaking at auditions like Ella, James, Lucy (even Kye it seems he can only sing one song) have done? Or is it that I cannot frucking hear them like D3? Or is it that they can't own the stage? Or is it the same dated music or cringe attempt at being current by just COPYING? Is it the stupid dance routines, overload of unneeded dancers and loud backing tracks?

I don't know!

The backing tracks and crowd probably make it difficult to hear yourself properly.

Most of the acts are treated like fodder- they aren't supposed to sound that good. The talent on display would be a lot better if the producers weren't trying to ram their carefully constructed "storylines" down our throats and let all the contestants shine.

The power of editing.

And also the fact you hardly saw any of it in the run up to the lives. They were all too busy cutting in sob-stories of council flats, office jobs, and how it means so much more to them than any other person in that exact same position.

5 second snippets of singing don't really give you the best impression.

Isn't that the year they introduced themes so they couldn't sing the song of their choice like they can in auditions?

Just a thought.

They pick their own songs in the audition stages.

I have noticed that a lot who are bad on the live shows, when they do the singofs they are much much better. I think the time has come to allow the contestants to pick their own songs for the lives.

In the sing offs there's nobody else on the stage and the arrangements tend to be sparser, as well. I imagine that makes it easier to focus on your vocal.

Totally agree with your post. Ella especially I've been so underwhelmed with compared to how I felt about her during the audition process. I think they need to let the acts sing their own songs and stop giving them predictable over-done "classics", or in other words cheesy, manufactured pop that they can belt out generically to fit in with mainstream chart music. Ella was more talented than that at auditions, but now she just seems like a puppet.

I think it does have a lot to do with song choice.

But why though... why do X Factor producers want to diminish the quality of the acts and lose credibility? What does that even gain? Instead of having Jade dress like an alien and sing that awful song through her nose, why not have her go her own way like she did in her audition where she sounded beautiful. Or let Lucy do her thing. Copying raps in her Yorkshire accent is not pleasant viewing, why is it repeated? And FFS why can't they let James have his guitar? It's torturous watching him without it. I can't imagine what it feels like for him. Poor guy is consciously thinking about where to place his body parts at every moment. Union J have turned into a bunch of plastic mannequins and what D3 are doing is just not them. They like to make sure their vocals are technically good and now they've let that go, they sounded a trainwreck. Why is Ella dressed like an old woman every week? Why is Jahmene even there? That guy has a great voice but he is just not a star. He doesn't know where to place his eyes. And Rylan's exceptional campness is now a 'talent'. Oh god i've gone mad.

The fact that contestants seem to always sound the best in their first auditions and in boot camp goes to show that they know themselves and their limitations/strengths better than the so called experts and professionals mentoring them.
