Oh, I love watching TV on the iPad, and especially Sky Sports and Sky News. The iPlayer gets a look in sometimes too

I expect you were working on a cure for cancer while simultaneously typing this. Bravo!”

Actually, at this moment, I'm designing a new radio jammer for use in places like Afghanistan. Its use is to stop mobile phones from being used to detonate IED's.

Its not a cure for cancer, but it does save lives.

Well said

It's too easy to jump to unwarranted conclusions about posters ...I know I've been as guilty as the next person occasionally

And as to why people buy tablets, we can only answer for ourselves, which I did in a post above.

Btw, today I got a kindle Paperwhite ....I find it an excellent device, despite its slightly mixed reviews. It meets my needs because my eyesight is poor and I need the integral light ....my husband's eyes are better, so now he's got my old kindle keyboard...each to their own

Saving lives or not, its still a bit weird when people can't get their heads round the idea that different people might have different uses for things than they do. Just saying.

I bought mine primarily for the sky demon flight planning and navigation app. I can plan flights in seconds and it gives me an accurate indication of where I am flying, controlled airspace boundaries where tall masts are, etc, etc. it improves my situational awareness in the air, and therefore reduces risk. The app was £180. Add that to the purchase price of the tablet, it still represents excellent vfm.

My 7" tablet is as small as a paperback and I can read it in the dark or in the light no problem. It's great for reading long technical PDF's (part of my job) without sitting at our main PC. I can also grab my e-mails etc while my wife uses the PC. It's great. It's a Backberry Playbook BTW.

I am thinking of getting one having tried out a couple round friends houses...they are very nice to use on your lap when sat on a sofa, much less cumbersome than an actual laptop along with decent battery times.

Not that I would getting one to replace the laptop, just something else to use. At the moment though me and the missus have a laptop each so I think add a tablet and one laptop would be all that is required.

Do we really really need one? Probably not but that can be said about most things. Can pretty much guarantee it wont be a waste of money though and will be used daily!

I also have various digital magazine subscriptions so it's the perfect device to sit reading them on.

It's the right size to have on the kitchen worktop to watch a TV show on while cooking or even using a few of my various cooking apps as a guide.

Of course all of this can be done using a laptop, but a lot of these activities I prefer to do on my tablet just because it's size and convince. .”

Yes, all of those things..and more. Before buying an iPad, I wondered how much use I'd get out of it, now I can't imagine being without one.
It's just so convenient, much more so than a laptop for everyday things like emails, social websites, keeping up with news stories, checking the football scores, watching YouTube, making the odd post to DS etc.

This is about the only good thing I found a Ipad being used for. I know a photographer and all his pictures are on his Ipad and he can show them to different people. A good way to show what he can do.

Other people i know that got a ipad, plays some silly web based games, do emails and browse the net, maybe listen to some music and watch the odd video.

Sound quality on the Ipad is awful without some headphoes, how on earth can people listen to it? i suppose people listen to stuff on Mobile phone speakers, so they are used to rubbish quality.

I put photos onto a DVD, most people got a DVD player. Not that I take many these days.

Even my Dad get a DVd player built into his TV, not that he uses it,

DVD is definitely on its way out, and BluRay won't be far behind. plenty of laptops and notebooks don't come with a drive, and they're generally no good for transferring stuff onto tablets or phones.

I don't know where you got this idea that DVd is on it's way out, or Blu-ray for that matter. both still got plenty of life, sure most films will now come out on Blu-ray because of the higher quality. but there are still plenty of people out there that don't have blu-ray and still have a CRT TV.

i have heard for years that CD are on their way out and yet they are still available and still selling well. Maybe 12 years olds don't think it is cool to have CDs, but other people still like them.

Oh wait, my Nieces children still have CD, and they range from 3 to 10. Oh my 25 your old Nephew still likes CDs, but then he still likes Vinyl's. i know other people of different ages that still use CD. why? because they prefer the quality, not that a 3 year old would know much about quality mind you.

Maybe when all us old ones have died out, Cd will vanish and so will DVD and b;u-ray, but it will be sad as quality will die with them.

When I see some people walking down the road with music coming from their mobile phones speaker, i think to my self that this person will never know about sound quality, mind you saying that I see less people doing that around here.

right, going to stick a record on of the Eagles.

DVDs are slowly on their way out as less people are buying them as downloading films is becoming easier and quicker so a lot of people are now not buying a film on a physical disc.

I can see where you are coming from with mentioning quality but you can get music and videos to download which are just as good quality as CD and BluRay – just most people are not overally bothered and I don’t think that they ever have done – I don’t think it’s a new thing.

I'm not certain about that. You don't have to go back many years to have found dedicated "Hi-Fi" shops in most big towns which always did good business. I certainly had "Hi-Fi separates" in the 80's and 90's with huge speakers and quality was everything.

I think the tipping point will come when a significant majority of the population has something akin to a smart (internet connected) tv or set top box that delivers same funstionality. People will just download films rather than buy a DVD.

I have always been of the opinion that the tablet's are just waste of money that people like to show off with and then put them back in the corner not to be used again

I have a laptop and a i Phone and cant really see the need for a tablet but to be honest as the price keeps coming down i keep finding myself more drawn to them

I cant quite justify buying one at the moment as i dont really know what i would use it for other than reading books and playing angry birds on a slighly bigger screen than my i Phone.

P.S Anyone have experience of the new Kindle Fire?

I've got a tablet,

It's a good device, but does nothing that my phone/laptop can't do

When I bought my Kindle at the turn of the year, I didn't even know it had a web browser but I found myself using it quite a lot.

Now the Kindle browser is very limited and monochrome and really it was the ultimate frustration with using this that turned me on to the potential of a truly multi-purpose, hand-held wi-fi device. Bearing in mind I have neither a laptop nor a smartphone (just a desktop and ultra-basic mobile), my tablet fills a niche and it's getting plenty of use so far.

That is really sad, you got people working hard to produce their music in the highest quality only for it to be dumbed down.

There is no way you can get blu-ray quality online,, unless you got a very fast broadband speed. you may think that they are, but they are not, even Netflix XHD is not up to blu-ray spec. too much compression.

As for music, it is a different thing as it don't need the same bandwidth, but you go to most online sellers and you be lucky to get over 150kb/s.

the problem for me is I want to watch stuff on my tablet. but can't buy the dvd and then (legally/easily) convert it to play on tablets or phones. Hence probably buying all future content with, at the very least, an included digital copy, if not just from direct download.

I'm not saying there are not lots of DVDs still sold - just that they are not selling as many now and that they are being replaced by downloads rather than BluRay.

It is a bit sad that people are not that interested in sound quality overall but I belive that is how it always has been.

At least where I have bought downloaded music from before it was certainly a ot higher than 150 kb/s

one thing i do use is the news info feeds

DM (sorry guys), BBC etc etc

easy way to read topical stories. we hardly buy papers now.

Good for photo viewing also. more portable than a laptop, and easier to use.
