What would happen if someone was sick in the semis?
Or later stages? Would they get a free pass through to the final?
If not, why not? Because that would be unfair? |

Probably not. I think Matt had a soar throat which hampered his performances a bit and I think other acts have been ill at this stage.

The winner is decided months in advance, so if their illness doesn't deviate from the plan then I don't imagine a lot would happen... if they were picked as the winner early on and they get sick then they will probably be applicable to a new rule set up in their favour.

They'd just persuade them to leave or sing anyway wouldn't they?

We had this discussion last night and it was quite interresting.
Simply put, who knows what they would do. I doubt they have a contingency plan for this, especially if it happens in the final |

What if someone was ill in the final?
Would they be crowned winner?

No. It's week 4 and there's still a lot of acts left to go. They can get away with giving her a pass for the week at this point because of that, plus the fact she's never been in the bottom when there's acts remaining who have can give an impression that just by missing one week she hasn't particularly dodged a bullet. If it was the semi finals though she'd either be forced to perform or have to leave the competition since they wouldn't be able to justify it at that point.

What if it was Ella or James in the final who were sick? Im not sure they could force someone to perform who is bed-ridden and how can they justify kicking them out when so many people will have voted. It's a really good question and i still don't know what would happen. |

Matt had bronchitis, tonsilitis, laryngitis and flu. He was on steroid jabs during the semi-final and finals. But he had to either go for it or drop out because that is too close to the end to be given a bye. I guess if you can't perform at that stage then it is just hard luck.

Easy. Anyone who misses a week should go into the bottom two by default, then make it an automatic public vote (not the judges) so the public can keep them in if they think they deserve it.

As this is clearly not the case, Lucy was given a bye, it's all a bit up in the air as to what would happen in this case. |

That might be what should happen, but the question is what would happen?

I'm not sure what would happen in the week leading upto the semi-final, but this did remind me of two similar reality show moments!
In the very first Australian Idol, one of the final three lost her voice during the semi-final, and then had to withdraw in the following results show, after being advised that continuing in the competition might permanently damage her voice. The other two contestants then just moved on. Also, in the build up to last years American Idol final, there was a lot of talk that one of the final two (Lauren) was going to have to pull out of the final due to illness. The eliminated third place contestant (Haley) was drafted into rehearsals just in case, but in the end Lauren performed in the final. (And lost) |

I think I read somewhere that they get through to the next week if they are sick before the semi final, however if it's the semi final, final or if they are sick for a second week they have to perform or leave the competition.

They would wheel out Burke.com to stand in for them...or bring back Amelia again.
