With the cold weather I'm looking for ideas for hot lunches. I use a flask. I've always got soups in the freezer and take pasta/leftover stews etc. I thought I might take porridge sometimes for a change. Now being Scottish, I like mine the traditional way - with salt. However, I'm open to suggestions for a wee change now and again. How do you like yours?

Any other ideas for flasks?

I can't stand porridge myself, I have tried and tried but can't!

My ex used to stir a couple of teaspoons of Nutella through his porridge.

I love my porridge and have it for breakfast nearly every day. I tend to make mine with cinnamon and oat milk, then add various fruit (usually strawberries and blueberries).

Those instant pots of porridge seem quite popular where I work, really easy to do too.

With salt, or a wee squeeze of golden syrup, failing that a wee spoonful of damson jam

Made with full fat milk, a drizzle of golden syrup, and (starting this week) some dried cherry/blueberries (article in the Mail over the weekend that these are helpful in my middle aged years)

Having some tonight for dinner! I prepare mine with semi-skimmed milk, a pinch of salt and either sugar or honey although I may instead add golden syrup today. Can't wait...

I like mine made with cocoa powder so it's chocolate flavour, otherwise it tastes like crap

Milk and sugar..........drizzle with golden strup, honey or maple syrup.............

The main thing though is to make sure that you buy a bag of decent oats ............I get Sainsbury 'Taste The Difference' Scottish Whole Rolled Porridge Oats.............. quite a mouthful !

I adore porridge. My favourite at the moment is with stewed apple, cinnamon and sultanas. I also love it with blueberries. I could live off the stuff .

I have tried so hard to like porridge
Every consistency you can think of, watery to wallpaper paste to cake,
made with water / milk / skimmed
with every 'extra' imaginable - honey, treacle, apples, cinnamon, cream, chocolate, banana, raisins, prunes..... everything.

... yet it still makes me gag.

The taste, the texture, everything is altogether revolting.

Ewww, that sounds horrid.

I much prefer oats uncooked, taste much better than the sticky gloop.

The oats you get in shops have always been processed and cooked before they get into the packet so the nutrition is the same.

Made with water until very thick. Then milk and a nice dollop of butter on the top and a sprinkling of sugar, not mixed in. Delicious!

Make it with water and a pinch of salt.
Pour some cold milk over it after cooking to cool it before eating.

It doesn't need anything else.

I had some with Drambuie and whipped cream in a guest house. It is lush

I use the liqueur creams you get at this time of year. They are quite sweet. Amaretto is good, makes it like a tiramisu.

Strawberry jam and cream

Peach jam and cream

Apple and cinnamon

Blueberry and maple syrup

This thread really puts me in the mood for plain porridge.

It's natural flavours are delicious. It does not need anything else.

I went on a porridge diet years ago. I enjoyed it.

i love porridge, i make mine with water and jumbo oats, and microwave for 3 minutes, then i add soya milk, banana, soya yogurt, sometimes i have frozen berries, other times i have dried apricots and cranberries
my gp says its the breakfast of champions and i happen to agree! its low fat, good for lowering cholesterol and totally natural
i dont go for ready made versions, they usually have loads of sugar, if i want to sweeten mine i use agave syrup or maple syrup

oooh im in the mood for some this morning now
its v filling too!
