You'll know in a week, that might be all the fans he has left.

You seem to be implying that someone, somewhere in the world has previously bought something that he has sung on.
If that's true farewell blue Earth I am off to Jupiter to escape the madness. |

It seems like this forum is just obsessed with people flopping or albums flopping or whatever the bloody hell else.
Find something a bit more interesting to talk about already. |

Will it flop? It is already breaking all flopping records. That much was clear by yesterday afternoon. Skulking about, threatening nothing and nobody at the margins of the charts, ignored and unloved by all but a few fanatics. It was inevitable that this album would bomb. I give it one week on the chart (and not particularly high up) and then oblivion. Let's see if he can then find another mickey mouse label to invest in a third album of co-written emotional pop rock dirges and covers next year. My guess is that he wont and it'll be a future of playing gigs at his local pub for the same lucky 200 ticket buyers. He'll be playing gigs in dining rooms at nursing homes within 10 years, mark my words.

It was advertised mid Coronation Street last night, so he has to hope he can cover that expense at least.

"The Fire is a wholly unremarkable album." Anyway, the reviewer gives a good account of the album. It is limp and disappointing in my view. The Nineteenth Time Ever I Saw Your Face is the only saving grace |

I might get it for my mum. She loved his version of "The first time ever I saw your face."

I liked him on the X Factor, but not much his versions of The Face, and I hate the emotional dirge he is releasing now.

If Matt and his fans are happy with the album he has released, why would you want to use words like 'flop' to describe it? There are plenty of artists out there who struggle to break into the top 10, not through lack of talent, but through lack of airplay, promotion and hype. Not saying that Matt's music is my cup of tea (it really isn't) but I'll never understand the mentality of people who like to gloat at perceived lack of success. It's undignified.

It depends on your definition of flop I guess. Matt's album is largely self financed (though I do share the concern about the costs of taking out TV ads). released through a small independent record label. It hasn't had much airplay and it won't get airplay partly because it's not on a major label and partly because he has stuck to the type of music he wants to make rather than chasing chart success. (not that there is anything wrong with chasing chart success) The "single" hasn't even been released on its own.
If you believe what he says (and there is really no reason to disbelieve it) this was a deliberate choice and he turned down at least one offer from a major label to go this way because he really just wants to get his music out the way he wants to make it. The album has mostly good reviews, though I couldn't really care less what the critics think. I and most of his fans love it. It's not in any way groundbreaking, that's just not what he does, but it's full of great songs that showcase his fantastic voice. The truth is that many major label stars are struggling with album sales at the moment, with sales of 100k seeming to be quite good in the current market. I don't know how anyone with a major label and major promotion make money from albums selling sub 100K, though I suppose 360 contracts help. Matt's label is on record as saying they can make a profit with sales of 10K (this was a general statement nothing to do with Matt) and I admit to being a bit sceptical about that (especially if they are paying for the adverts) so I'm reasonably confident that Matt will make enough money to make a new album and that's all he cares about anyway. So if a flop is determined by not achieving platinum status like Letters then yes I imagine it will be a flop, if flop is determined by making money probably not. Most of Matt's fans (including me) generally don't bother posting on here anymore as the hate Matt brigade seem to have more fun on their own. I just thought a bit of balance might be a good idea. The real test for the album will be if it can hang around and take advantage of the christmas sales increases. I think that will be difficult as there are some likely huge sellers like Robbie, One D and maybe Little Mix coming along in the next few weeks which will make it hard for him to make an impact but who knows? |

I think it's great, actually, that someone dumped from the show can turn their life and career round like Joe and Matt have done. Better than Steve Brookside who just spends his time tweeting about the football or shaking his fist at the X Factor every Saturday night. Or Leon Jackson who has completely disappeared.
Joe and Matt are probably happier than they've ever been. Good luck to them. |

Well, I'm listening to it now and I'm enjoying it now. "Water" and "All That Matters" are beautiful. The album as a whole, so far, is more sophisticated than Letters and that's a good thing imho. It's clear that this album is a truer representation of what Matt is all about in terms of his musical identity. Personally I hope it does at least respectably.

Contracts for non superstars are usually for a certain number of albums, and the label has the option to renew or not after each album, but the artist hasn't. Artists always say that it is a mutual decision, but it only happens after an unsuccessful era. (Transfer between one Sony label to another is not the same.) As for flop or not flop, I don't know what level of sales are expected from an indie artists, since they have less promotion but less overheads than majors. Matt still has a core fanbase. If it is large enough, and if he can keep it or even better expand it in the future, he may be able to sell enough album and make enough from gigging. I don't think that his music is good enough for him to ever make it big, but it may be possible for him to keep going on a small scale. |

It will probably achieve a respectable first week position. But it will freefall next week.
