I'm afraid I think that was just poor writing.
I know we like to Gittins-bash, but I didn't know he was the writer until the end credits, but I could already tell.
Clunky. Shallow. Out of character (and not just for Syed, I felt that Sharon, Phil, Zainab were all a bit off).
He gets the main points across but it's always wooden, unnatural dialogue.
Better writing (ie with some kind of characterisation) could have made the 'we want to be a family in Birmingham' much more convincing. There could have been a line about the fiancee coming from a big family, or being desperate to meet Yasmin after all he's heard about her, or Amira missing her more than she thought she would.
There's just no FEELINGS in any of it. It's all surface facts. Which is why I think the actors struggle to make it convincing.
