Possibly only Apple stores will have stock? So the other retailers will only advertise once they have their own stock.

No preorder until they have a stock allocation. Imagine the bad publicity if they take preorders but don't get stock for 2 months.

But is it worth driving to an Apple store to pick up an "iPad with retina display"?

I want to replace my iPad 1st generation but with no preorders my closest Apple store is 40 miles away.

I would go but don't want to be queuing for hours or they run out of stock.

Can you not preorder it online? From Apple.

I asked the same question here:

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1752749

It seems opinions are divided almost equally between Apple Store, a reseller, and pre-order from Apple online.

The first batch available for pre-order ran out days ago; so now, the only option is to wait for the second tranche, currently estimated at one week's shipping.

As for resellers: I called John Lewis, Argos *and* Currys PC World today to ask when they're likely to get their stock. All say next week - C/PCW said *maybe* Friday, but more likely Monday.

So, I'm taking a punt and going to the Apple Store. Having done some digging online, as long as you get there by 6am (before the 8am launch) then you're almost certain to get one; at least, that's how it's gone the last couple of launches. Of course, that still may not be worth it for you since you're 40 miles away - for me it's just a 5-minute trip to Regent Street, and I'm *just about* willing to wait for two hours (God knows why)!

Why waste time on advertising when just about every "journalist' is drooling over it in print

The OP doesn't really mean 'advertising' - he/she means 'listing', i.e. making it available as a product for pre-order/selection. Most of the resellers are advertising it quite heavily with the same splash screen, but you can't order it - it just says 'Coming Soon'.

Some Apple stores only take appointments they get so busy.

Appointments relate to Genius Bar replacements, the OP wants to buy an iPad. He just has to go to the shop, probably queue for a while and then should get one.

Not a huge hype or demand around the new 9.7" iPad, everyone seems to want the Mini.

What do geniuses actually do ?

I thought iproducts were indestructible yet simple to use....surely geniuses never get busy if they can't take sales ????

AFAIK, they don't just solve problems (both hardware and software), but answer general questions and offer tuition. My mum (ever the technophobe) had a good chat with them to learn how to use her iPad when she first got it.

Plus, they can get you out of Apple's Ts and Cs when you find yourself agreeing to be the middle participant in a HumancentiPad*.

It's because the Geniuses are so busy dealing with sales they have to book a slot for you to talk to them

Just wait until it becomes available in a store near you.

It doesn't need advertising, does it? Already my chances of getting one tomorrow are rapidly approaching zero...
