I asked the same question here:

It seems opinions are divided almost equally between Apple Store, a reseller, and pre-order from Apple online.
The first batch available for pre-order ran out days ago; so now, the only option is to wait for the second tranche, currently estimated at one week's shipping.
As for resellers: I called John Lewis, Argos *and* Currys PC World today to ask when they're likely to get their stock. All say next week - C/PCW said *maybe* Friday, but more likely Monday.
So, I'm taking a punt and going to the Apple Store. Having done some digging online, as long as you get there by 6am (before the 8am launch) then you're almost certain to get one; at least, that's how it's gone the last couple of launches. Of course, that still may not be worth it for you since you're 40 miles away - for me it's just a 5-minute trip to Regent Street, and I'm *just about* willing to wait for two hours (God knows why)!
