Thursday 12th September - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

5 Live Baseball with Josh Chetwynd and Erik Janssen

Baseball: American League
Boston Red Sox @ Tampa Bay Rays - Dave Wills and Andy Freed (commentary provided by WDAE 620AM - "The Rays Radio Network")

The originally scheduled 5 Live Baseball game of Washington Nationals @ New York Mets at 6pm made way for coverage of Huddersfield Giants v Wigan Warriors, the first game in the Super League Play-Offs (the dates for which I believe were only finalised after the conclusion of the regular season). Instead we were given this game, probably the best on last night's slate as it involved two teams still in contention for the postseason, in the overnight hours from midnight. I guess this might explain why Nat Coombs didn't join Josh Chetwynd in the presenting chairs (he had initially be trailed to host coverage) and Erik Janssen, the producer from the MLB on Five days, did.

Sunday's 5 Live Baseball double header will be Chicago Cubs @ Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants @ Los Angeles Dodgers. The first of those two games begins at 6.30pm our time, so they'll have a big build-up from 6pm and it should overlap into the second game. Nonetheless it's a good choice of match-ups, what with both of the home teams being in Playoff contention.

5 Live Baseball with Tony Husband and Erik Janssen

Baseball: National League
Chicago Cubs @ Pittsburgh Pirates - Greg Brown and Steve Blass (commentary provided by KDKA SportsRadio 93.7 The Fan - "The Pittsburgh Pirates Radio Network")
San Francisco Giants @ Los Angeles Dodgers - Vin Scully, Charley Steiner and Rick Monday (commentary provided by KLAC AM 570 - "The Dodgers Radio Network")

As is the norm with the Dodgers radio broadcasts, the legend that is Vin Scully did the first three innings before Charley and Rick took over in the fourth inning and commentated to the end. 5LSE joined the Giants @ Dodgers game during the top of the second inning after the conclusion of their first live match. I don't think they've confirmed their upcoming 5 Live Baseball games yet, but live coverage is scheduled for both Thursday and Sunday.

American Football: NFL Week 2
Jacksonville Jaguars @ Oakland Raiders - Greg Papa and Tom Flores (commentary provided by Compass Media)

This week's co-host Dan Louw is one of the panel from the Americarnage US sports podcasts with Nat Coombs and Mike Carlson of Channel 4 and 5LSE fame. Speaking of whom, Nat was their over-the-phone guest at half-time and he returned the favour on Channel 4's Sunday Night Football later that evening by giving Dan and AR90s' coverage a mention.

Jags @ Raiders ahead of Broncos @ Giants was a strange choice, can only assume it was to give the Jags some coverage ahead of their Wembley match but that's still a fair way off.

Depending on when they chose it there was also the possibility of Menelik Watson. So the angle would have been Britain's team vs a Briton.

Ireland vs England

Commentators: Simon Mann, John Kenny and Michael McNamee

Summarisers: Vic Marks and Alan Lewis

England vs Australia

Commentators: Jonathan Agnew (1, 3 and 5), Charles Dagnall (2, 3, 4 and 5), Simon Mann (1 and 2), Ed Smith (1, 3 and 5), Alison Mitchell (2 and 4) and Simon Hughes (4)

Summarisers: Michael Vaughan (1, 2, 3, 4), Dirk Nannes (All games) Vic Marks (1, 2, 4, 5), Alec Stewart (3, 5) and Alan Mulally (5)

The 1st and 3rd games in the Eng vs Aus series were washouts, but, I have listed the planned teams anyway.

Simon Mann presented games in which Agnew was not part of the commentary team, except for the 4th ODI where Alison Mitchell made her debut leading the team for a home England match. I think this was because Mann, who was down on the TMS twitter feed as commentating but did not appear, was ill or could not make it. This explains the otherwise slightly odd decision to use Simon Hughes as a stand in for just the one game.

Yes, I thought this was a strange match choice as well and I think you are probably right in assuming it was primarily picked because of the Jaguars' involvement in one of the Wembley games. Clearly the "Manning Bowl" was the pick of the post-9pm matches and that AR90s didn't go with it and picked a far less appealing match instead certainly contributed to my decision to listen to Vin Scully and the Dodgers in the baseball over on 5LSE.

On that, tonight's 5 Live Baseball game will be Los Angeles Dodgers @ Arizona Diamondbacks from 9.40pm. They've picked a slightly later game than they usually would as again a Super League Play-Off match, Huddersfield Giants v Hull FC, will precede coverage on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra. Sunday's double header from 6pm will be Cincinnati Reds @ Pittsburgh Pirates and Oakland Athletics @ Minnesota Twins. Over on Absolute Radio 90s, this Sunday's live NFL game will be Indianapolis Colts @ San Francisco 49ers. The next three weeks worth of Sunday 9pm games will then be Pittsburgh Steelers @ Minnesota Vikings (29/9), Denver Broncos @ Dallas Cowboys (6/10) and New Orleans Saints @ New England Patriots (13/10).

Baseball: National League
Los Angeles Dodgers @ Arizona Diamondbacks - Charley Steiner and Rick Monday (commentary provided by KLAC AM 570 - "The Dodgers Radio Network")

Radio 5 Live Sports Extra joined the game in the top of the fourth inning, having started their coverage at around 9.50pm at the conclusion of the Super League Play-Off game detailed above. 5 Live Baseball usually take the home team's local radio feed, but on this occasion they decided to take that of the visiting Dodgers, given that they could clinch the National League West division with a victory.

5 Live Baseball with Tony Husband and Andy Gibb

Baseball: National League
Cincinnati Reds @ Pittsburgh Pirates - Greg Brown and Steve Blass (commentary provided by KDKA SportsRadio 93.7 The Fan - "The Pittsburgh Pirates Radio Network")

Baseball: American League
Minnesota Twins @ Oakland Athletics - Ken Korach, Vince Cotroneo and Ray Fosse (commentary provided by 95.7FM The Game - "The Oakland A's Radio Network")

With the Reds @ Pirates game starting just after 6.30pm our time (which is the time they went on-air) and the Twins @ A's game beginning just after 9pm, 5LSE carried the earlier match in full before joining the latter during the bottom of the second inning. Early on in the second game, the A's broadcast played in commentary from Matt Hicks of the Texas Rangers Radio Network on the walk-off grand slam home run hit by Justin Maxwell of the Kansas City Royals that defeated the Rangers in extra innings to hand the A's the AL West division title.

At the end of the broadcast, Tony Husband mentioned that the next time 5 Live Baseball is currently scheduled to be on-air is Thursday 3rd October, which will stage the opening games of both National League Division Series, although he explicitly stated that as 5LSE has a flexible schedule they could well do another game(s) before then. Indeed, 5 Live Baseball is currently pencilled in on the 5LSE online schedule for 6pm-midnight next Sunday, which will the final day of the regular season.

I guess this is a tentative thing and I wouldn't surprised if they don't bother to carry a live game next Sunday should the MLB playoff line-up have been finalised by then, leaving them with nothing but dead rubbers. As things stand, if they do broadcast 5 Live Baseball next Sunday then I think they might opt to do just the one commentary of an earlier game - all of the postseason contenders who haven't clinched their divisions or a wildcard spot yet are in matches that start before 9pm our time, so I suspect they'll pick up one of the post-6pm starts and maybe take the final few innings of any significant matches that are still going on after their main game has finished. As for 5 Live Baseball's usual Thursday timeslot this week, 5LSE will be covering the first of the Super League play-off semi-finals from 7.45pm and in any event, there are no MLB games taking place in the evening our time on that night.

NFL on Absolute Radio 90s with Adam Hunt and Dan Louw

American Football: NFL Week 3
Indianapolis Colts @ San Francisco 49ers - Ted Robinson and Eric Davis (commentary provided by KNBR - "The US Bank 49ers Radio Network")

In a change from their first two weekly broadcasts, AR90s opted to take the home team 49ers' local radio feed as opposed to national coverage (which from what I read elsewhere was available on this game, with Compass Media producing the US national radio broadcast of their featured match). It'll be interesting to see if this was a one-off or if they'll switch between national and local radio broadcasts from week to week.

Interview with Jonathan Wall of Five Live in Broadcast this week where he says one thing they're thinking about, in an attempt to broaden their sporting horizons, is darts on the radio. He says that producers have pitched the idea of doing live commentary on the final of the World Championships and he thinks it might be good in a Test Match Special style. So we'll have to see if they get as far as trying it on air.

There's no reporters at any of the games as both Welsh regions playing tonight (the Cardiff Blues and the Scarlets) are playing away. Occasionally they mention what's happening "on the monitors".

Interesting news and thanks for drawing our attention to it Steve.

Should this come to pass, this wouldn't be the first time there has been darts commentary on the radio. In the year immediately before and after Talk Radio rebranded as talkSPORT (1999-2000), that station covered the following PDC events: the One Hour Time Trial between Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld (which was televised by ITV2), the 2000 PDC World Championship final and the 2000 World Grand Prix (the whole tournament, which took place across a single weekend that year). Their coverage has been discussed on this forum before, so for those sufficiently interested take a look at this thread.

I suppose the big question is, if they were to do commentary on the World Championship final, would this be from the PDC version of the event or the BDO edition? Although they have provided reports from both competitions in the mid to late 2000s, in recent years BBC Radio 5 Live have only sent reporters to the Lakeside for the BBC-televised BDO event (although various BBC Local Radio stations have carried the syndicated updates on the PDC World Championship from the Dave Luddy International agency that you also hear on talkSPORT during this time). I'm sure they'd be more interest in a radio commentary on the PDC World Championship final than the BDO version, simply because the latter is on free-to-air television and the former isn't.
