Glass really is not a good thing to put a mobile in!

Yeah I was disapointed in that too but I'm not a clumsy person so tend not to drop any of my devices, I have never had any issues with my "fragile" iPhone 4 in 2 and a half years.

To be blunt, it's not a deal breaker for me.

I know 4 people with iPhone 4s and 1 had the back shatter and fall out and one had the front all splinter.

I'm not Apples biggest fan but the replacement costs were very reasonable, the back replacement especially was a very simple 2 minute job with the part being dirt cheap.

that said seeing how easy the iPhone ones went its the only thing making me nervous with the Nexus 4

It's not 'as frail' as the iPhone. In this case Josh said he accidentally whacked his device on to the kitchen floor, so any modern device would take a serious beating from that, let alone one made from glass. Considering the back glass plate is slightly more protected than the 4S one was, I think that dropping it onto the floor won't cause severe damage, but again it's hard to know at this stage as the device isn't even on sale yet.

I have had my iPhone 4 for nearly 2 years and it's still in fine order. Just don't be a klutz with your tech.

Its got gorilla glass, its highly scratch resistant, my Huawei has it too.

Without it, your screen would be a mess of scratches in no time.

Has this been posted by an Apple employee?

Maybe folks should wait until the product is launched officially and they have first hand experience of it before making such negative comments.

It's glass, if dropped on it, it is likely to break even gorilla glass.

TBH if you have a tendency of dropping your phone it should be in a case.

I do find it funny that when the iPhone 4 came out the complaints from Android users of No SD Card Slot, No Removable Battery, No LTE, Glass back and so forth and now Google seemed to have followed suit.

That is very funny But then there is choice, and people can still get those things if the like cant they.

Yeah, this was my major concern too.

After looking on the 'net, however, it seems that iPhone 4S replacement backs can be purchased for under 10. No reason that Nexus 4 backs won't also be available for a decent price.

I'm hoping that there will actually be replacement backs made out of materials other than glass. If i end up breaking mine i'd prefer to be able to replace it with a back made out of that rubberised plastic used on the Nexus 7.

This just in, glass is prone to breaking when dropped!

Never dropped my phone in a way that would cause damage so still a purchase for me!

I have seen about 8 people now using iPhone with shattered screens. All after the girls. Just get it repaired!

Perhaps it was just wallpaper.

True but it does show you where things are going, or where Google wants them to go.

The Nexus line is designed by Google so obviously it's going to be built around their own interests. There's nothing stopping other Android OEMs including those features you mentioned earlier in their devices and that's unlikely to change in the future.

I'm aware of that and wasn't suggesting otherwise, I was talking about Google and the Nexus line, not other manufacturers.

The same way Nokia are championing their Windows Phones in a similar fashion.

Very true although in fairness they haven't followed the price
For half the price of an iphone it's surprising what suddenly looks acceptable I suppose

Users shouldn't have to fix the phone though should they? iPhone users especially go on about how beautifully designed they are, then they cover them up! Whats that all about?

Indeed the property of glass that is useful is transparency, not strength. Although I must admit I do like the premium look and feel it gives, hence why I have a glass computer desk

At least they have made it as strong a glass as they possibly can.

I've had three Glass phones, never smashed any. I'm hardly gentle with them either. However i have had plastic phones chip, crack and fall apart within a year of having them.

Even looking at my friends year old 3GS (plastic) v's a year old 4S the 4S is in far better condition on all sides.

Glass tends to be move durable to scratches but big knocks and it will crack whereas plastic often wont as it suffers impacts alot better.

I was the same my 2 year old 3G was scratched badly all over the back where as my 30 month iPhone 4 is in mint condition.
