Is it possible to put a PS3 disc drive into a PC?
A mate is selling a broken PS3, the disc drive works fine, I was wondering is the connection the same as a desktop PC uses? I realise the size of the drive itself might be smaller than a regular PC drive, but Im sure I could make it work for an ultra cheap blue ray player lol.

Well dont know what that article was on about, as soon as i saw the ps3 drive connector I knew it wouldnt work. Opened up the PC today and the connectors are totally different. The ps3 is a sort of ribbon type and the one on the pc is "proper".

Define "ribbon" and "proper". Or do you mean IDE/PATA and SATA?

Yes, the eHow article just assumes the cables will fit, but all the other sites I've seen say the PS3 has a proprietory cable which looks like a PATA cable but has a different pin-out.

I actually had 2 PS3 drives one of the originals and one from a slimline. They both have different cables, but both of the "ribbon" type. |

Found this guide on the interweb that shows removal of a PS3 Blu-Ray drive. Looks completely different to any bog standard PC drive.
