My iphone back and sides are chipped as I dropped it on concrete.

What's the cheapest and best way to get it fixed?

It's probably worth going to an Apple Store just to see what they say.

All I've heard is the bill to repair could be a lot.

It could be £180 although you may be able to blag it for less or free. It's the only method of repair that will preserve your warranty though.

A quick google has brought up two sites charging £130 and £150 for the repair so frankly I'd pay the extra if Apple won't do goodwill and get not only a new handset but one which still has warranty

It's very confusing all these different prices.

Its an iPhone 5, its definitely still in warranty ....

Although just buying a case/bumper/screen protector will hide the damage and stop further problems.

b.Out-of-Warranty Service

If you own an iPhone that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will service your iPhone for the Out-of-Warranty Service Fee listed below.

Please note Out-of-Warranty Repair Service fees from your carrier may be different than those listed below.

iPhone Model

Out-of-Warranty Service

iPhone 5

£ 186.44

Yours will be an out of warranty service as its damage caused by you.

I just paid £529 for a sim free iPhone so that's not a great price for a repair.

I dropped mine and it chipped also, absolutely a joke that a phone of this price should chip so easily. I had a cover on it but it only really covered the back.

You could say it has an 'intermittent problem' of some sort... Mine was on day 27 so I rang CPW but they said they have basically no stock for weeks and it would be better going into an Apple Store. However in an Apple store they would just give you a refurbished model.

In the end I just left it. I didn't want to wait for weeks for a new one to arrive from CPW, nor did I want a refurbished model from Apple, which although likely to be 'as new', I didn't want to risk getting one with chips out of the box or a rubbish battery life which have been reported (I'm very impressed with the battery on my own). I just bought a new cover that covered the chip. Out of sight out of mind! Lol.

I guess so.

I feel bad as think these cases take the look away from the phone. I have a soft case for it but have to remove it to use the phone.

I know what you mean, though I'm used to cases as I always put them on my phones.

if you do decide to return you're basically probably looking at either a wait of a few weeks for a new one or risk getting a refurbished one that's not as good as your own from Apple.

Take it to an Apple Store if you have one close. 99% certain they will exchange for another phone. If not, then see what your options are.

Yes hopefully.

If it's like £180+ pounds it's not worth it though. Nearest store is about 20 miles so may have to wait a few weeks to go.

Why are you setting off now to walk there ?

I guess its to late now but a good practical case is a must for a £500 + phone

Not having a go at anyone but this is a common situation, unfortunately. It just baffles me people spending lots of money (or getting into 24 months contracts) to get one of these phones and won't go the extra mile (ie 15-20 quid) to get a decent phone cover. The chances of dropping the phone are not that small. I bought a decent one for mine, dropped 2-3 times in the last 2 years, it is still as good as new, not one scratch on it. The cover might not be good or the situation happened in unusual circumstances, but at least you are doing everything you can to protect your expensive buy.

I have a few options:

*Stick with it as it is (not a great option)

*Buy a replacement, sell the one with dented corners.

*Repair it but at the price of a repair I could practically buy the latest Ipod touch

*Wait to see if the repair price comes down or if some third party phone shop will repair it? At the moment there doesn't seem many replacement parts around.

The casing won't be made available on its own as a spare part as it has the IMEI number etched onto it.

Your only option to 'fix' it will be to get a replacement handset one way or another.

If going with this option you may want to try O2 recycle. They tend to be a bit more forgiving of damage to phones compared to other recycling sites or private buyers

True although you need to remember that you will be walking out the apple shop with a replacement handset with the remaining warranty of the original intact. Also bear in mind that the majority of insurance policies for the iPhone have an excess in the region of £100 so this isn't really much more. You would also be able to insure the replacement handset through your bank or home contents if you wanted

*Wait to see if the repair price comes down or if some third party phone shop will repair it? At the moment there doesn't seem many replacement parts around.
3rd party repair could invalidate any remaining warranty. Apple only tend to drop the out of warranty repair pricing when a new iPhone is released and in the case of the iPhone 5 they kept all the original pricing for the older models (£139 for 4S, £119 for all others) and simply created the new more expensive £179 tier for iPhone 5

I checked and it says £399 but with cosmetic damage it's only £359. A loss of £200 means the Apple store price is still cheaper.
