Well, it seems a great deal of people are believing Saint Sharon's view of Steve and feel that every possible cricticism of Steve is perfectly acceptable, correct, truthful and justifiable because Osbourne told them so.

Well some people think that Sharon rocks - maybe she's seen as a role model to some....

We are seeing an increasing number of armchair bullies. People voted for Natalie Appleton 4/5 times in a row to do the bush tucker trials even though she was rubbish at it. I really wondered whether if this was about being cruel ie just to watch her suffer, because it sure was not entertaining. Same thing happens to the unpopular BB contestants. Everyone who enters a reality type/talent show is fair game to be booed it seems.

People have no manners.

I don't agree. I think many people are seeing what she said as confirming their own fears/impressions of him.

Perhaps we could keep this thread to discussing the topic, rather than turning it into another 'bash an x factor participant thread'?

Society has always had a competitive nature, which manifest itself in games etc etc. its a release valve for our more primal instincts. However, there used to also be an element of 'fair play' and acceptance of losing , as long as you did your best. these days more and more though, and is evident in reality tv shows, it seems to have regressed to an almost tribal primal state, where you get different 'sides', who cannot let go and want to vent their spleen at every oppurtunity. Sometimes even a small joke or bit of banter will set them off, if they peceive it as an 'attack', yet they will justify there own comments as 'free speech' whilst ripping apart anyone that disagrees with them.
not all, but some.
its tribal behaviour, and society does seem to be regressing somewhat to this state. maybe its always been like that, but these days its more 'acceptable' to do it. After all, if a kid sees mum and dad slagging off for eg, Michelle from pop idol because she 'fat' then the kid is going to think its ok to do the same to an overweight kid at their school. The public throw their hands up at bullying, yet what sort of example do adults give?.

sorry rambling on, and gotta go now....

I think people's reaction to it is more indicative of current society than the event itself. It's indicative of the tabloid reading hysteria driven society - of policies written on the back of Daily Mail editorials, and viewpoints drawn by what they see in the lowest common denominator McMedia. People view everything in black and white these days. This goes from the hysterical bleatings of the moronic masses about asylum seeking immigrant single mothers being the cause of all societal ills, or that Sharon in the antichrist and her and her family deserve a dozen biblical plagues for losing her rag at a some guy she doesn't like on TV. Everyone is one side of the other - Steve is a saint, Sharon is evil or Sharon is a breath of truth and Steve is a smug serial killer-smiled disingenuous creep.

The truth is, that everything has a shade of grey. The truth exists from both viewpoints, and yet everything we are told by those in power in politics or the media makes us see only right or wrong - us and them. No-one is prepared to accept - both in society and in this case - that all sides may have a valid and geniune view worth considering.

Or something.

My view of it.

Its not society particularly that is on trial here, more likely were are seeing the comming of age of the internet. Much like a growing child, I feel we have entered the period of adolecence.

The net has been with us in one for or another for a very short space of time. For most of us who got into the net early, it has been an idilic place to trade thoughts and views. However, very little harm could be done due to the small number of people who you could reach. It was much like a young child where minor squables would quickly blow over. We were learning to walk, talk and to soak up "information"

As take up of the internet has grown, so has its age. We are now adolecents and like them (sorry to any teens on this board but you will understand what I am saying in 15-20 years ) we think we know every thing. There is information overload so we throw out the bits that we either do not wish to listen to or the bits we find too hard to understand. As we all try to find out place on a forum we are led to dogma, arguments and bitterness. This has shown its self (especialy over the past few days) where anyone who has a view is knocked down for daring to disagree with another.

The media (being an OAP) is very set in its ways. It doesn't change much and is still as bad as it used to be - much like Victor Meldrew - it gets angry at every thing and everybody just goes "Yeah, Yeah" and gets on with their life. As an adolecent, the Net will not just get on with its life as everyone feels they have a point to make/prove and will stop at nothing to get it across.

Something to back up these thoughts.

1 - How many people emailed to complain about the comments rather than wrote a letter - probably virtualy all.
2 - how many get their news/gosip from this and other forums rather than waiting for the evening news or morning paper - probably virtualy all.

We are a playground, we are trying to make friends but making enemies because of the friendships we make. We do not give ourselves enough time to take in all the information so we react rather than consider. We argue rather than discuss. We abuse rather than support.

The world around us goes on and is unchanged. It is only in the Internet that any of these issues matter.

Would be cheaper than a dog, not sure how you'd take it out for a walk though! (and not so nice to cuddle up to at night!)

It has come to my attention that not everyone is taking this assigment seriously. I need 500 words from all of you on my desk by 3.10pm tomorrow. Anybody who doesn't get it in on time will have me to answer to.
[Stop sniggering in the corner Histeria, don't think I can't see you. Your incisive sociological commentary won't stop me giving you a detention you know.]

I finished my homework early. Do I get a gold star? Is it playtime for the good kids?

As it's nearly the end of term, instead of further maths and statistics you are allowed to watch a video of the X factor final - no talking is allowed during this lesson whatsoever. Or sign language.
