The Real Coronation Street
Some web links that you may be interested in showing the ‘real’ Coronation Street aka Archie Street in Salford or Ordsall to be precise. It was demolished in 60s/70s I believe and now is little more than wasteland- a shame really.
Did you know that one of the Manchester United players Eddie Coleman who died in Munich plane crash lived on Archie Street? Archie Street was used in the credits in the 60s. Interesting that there was a church at the end of the street beside the 'rovers'. Not sure what was on the other side of the street- probably more terraced houses. http://www.spectec.co.uk/salfordquays/news/nl1071.htm http://www.salford.gov.uk/leisure/mu...ries-area7.htm |

Wow! These are fantastic - especially the one on the first page at the bottom left.
St Clements Church was apparently the inspiration for the Mission of Glad Tidings Hall. However, I don't think that Archie Street had a pub....? |

I think it may have because I have a video of the first 12 episodes and in the closing credits the camera would start at the shop and make its way down the street pausing at the houses of the characters who had appeared in that episode. Beside number one was a pub and then a church. It looks like there was a pub but maybe not.

It is quite possible that the credits from the ending are images of the interior Street set. |

yes I noticed that the real street looked longer. No I think they filmed the real street for the credits and somehow edited out the extra houses. Because as the camera passed by you could see through the windows as they had those curtains that split in the middle. They looked very neat and tidy.
Also as far as I know the interior set was actually split in tow because the studio wasnt long enough to accomodate all of it! |

Also as far as I know the interior set was actually split in tow because the studio wasnt long enough to accomodate all of it! I sometimes wonder about the truth of the so-called "split set" where the interior set was split it two. There are certainly come pictures that I have seen which prove this, but many more which disprove it. Coronation Street 1961 There is a clip of the Street opening credits from 1961 on this website, which funnily enough has suddenly disappeared (if you click it you get an Emmerdale theme) but you can see a picture. Anyway it shows a scene of the full Street, with Ken and his dad Frank coming out of the front door of Number 3 (their former home). This is without a doubt the indoor set and not Archie Street but as you can see there is more-or-less a whole Street there. I think the key to knowing if the houses on your video are Archie Street or in fact the indoor set is whether or not they have separate bay-windows or they are joined in twos. If they are joined then it is the indoor set. |

True i was thinking of that opening sequence from 1961 with Ken. I saw it on TV Ark. I will watch the video again but Im sure they had seperate bay windows.
The pub that joined the houses was much bigger than the Rovers we know- in fact it looked as the Rovers should do on the outside i.e. allowing for the toilets in Kens room and the Select Bar and living quarters. It is called Rovers Return but they probably just stuck a sign up. Also in the colour photo there seems to be some building at the end like another church. I wonder is this a vew of the other side of the street for example the view we would see from Ritas shop looking towards Audreys salon? |

Here is a link to St Clement in Salford. It looks like the church they use in Coronation Street. Look at the map- the Chruch is on Hulton Street which to me looks to be off the main road that runs past Salford Quays- where Fatty Arbuckles and thos places are. I know that there is an Archie Street off that road near Hulton Street so that must be it. There is nothing now except wasteland and a sports hall. There is newer council type housing behind it.

As far as the terraces go yes, but there is much more variation to the Weatherfield skyline than in a scene like that.
Most streets in Weatherfield are shorted and only have about 10 houses max. whereas these streets have up to around 25. Weatherfield has a much larger industrial influence with factories and other light industries springing up in places. Chimneys piercing the skyline, including the Newton and Ridley brewery. There are also a number of tower blocks in Weatherfield, many more than we can see in that picture, and in much closer proximity to the terraces. There is also, of course, the viaduct which cuts right down the centre of Weatherfield. The town in which I live is full of terraces, old industries etc and I feel that Weatherfile and Coronation Street itself are, and always have been, a quite accurate portrait of what a northern town looks and feels like. |

Are there any other streets resembling Corrie still around in Salford? Real shame they demolished Archie Street...
