Clive Davis was asked his opinion on X Factor as a brand. He said that Simon has alienated other markets as he has focused solely on pop music. He believes Simon should be looking for artists that have the X Factor in all genres of music, pop, rock, soul, country, it has become to specific on their talent search. He also believes that each judge should have a different expertise in the industry. He said the perfect panel would be to have an artist., record executive, producer/songwriter and a choreographer. This would give the contestant a more balanced and clear understanding what they are doing right and wrong. Do you guys agree with Clive ?

I will have to agree with Clive on this one. It isn't good enough to just focus on Pop Music cause it's the mainstream of today's music and it's what the majority prefers to other kinds. That said, that may well be the reason why Big Band was axed.

They do cover rock songs and soul songs and if anything they've let in a few too many rap acts. It was a bit of a novelty with Cher in 2010 but I think they've overdone it now.

Generally they'll only cover popular songs and often rock or soul songs that are big chart hits become classed as pop for that reason. So "pop" covers a fairly wide ground if used in that sense. X Factor needs to keep it broad and mainstream.

This man is what, about 102? I don't need any links to his CV, as they're not going to sway me a jot. I've yet to catch up with this year's show, but last year had all of those genres represented. And hip hop (of sorts), too. They have those disciplines pretty much covered on the current panel as well. I'm at a complete loss as to what a choreographer would bring to the party, though - but Brian Friedman works with them as it is.

I think what he means is that there are not artists who represent all those categories, yes they may cover rock/rnb/country/jazz, songs but there is very few artists which represent those genres solely, covering the genre is different to representing it. That's my interpretation of what he means anyways

clive`s age is irrelevant. he was asked the question and he give his opinion from his perspective. i agree with his observation about the judges. american idol/the voice have judges from different backgrounds and it makes the critiques more interesting coming from different perspectives.

We have had most genre's of music on the show, its just that many dont have a market. For example, country music has not been big in the UK for years, and Carolynne, and kinda country act eliminated first show. It has all been tried, but the plain pop always trumps, as its most popular.

And with regards the panel, I would like more diversity, but having Choreographers mentor I wouldnt like. They will be good on the performance side, but what aspect of music and singing will they give to there contestants. However if they were not mentors, and just judges, than Choreographer would be right!!!

Yeah I agree with him. Thats actually why I liked The Voice even though it's not as big as X Factor they allow each artist to explorer their preferred genre rather than having them sing in different themes unrelated to the kind of genre they are hoping to record.

So like Tyler James 'singing' Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, then?

These are genres of pop music, to an extent, and they're all covered. It's hardly all genres of music.

I think the problem is that they're looking for something "current" at any one time, and there's a focus on guitar busker types and boring earnest acts at the moment. They don't seem to actually like pop music, let alone good pop music. They shouldn't have pre-conceived ideas about what they're looking for, or fulfill quotas for different types of act.

He said the perfect panel would be to have an artist., record executive, producer/songwriter and a choreographer. This would give the contestant a more balanced and clear understanding what they are doing right and wrong. Do you guys agree with Clive ?
Completely agree with this bit.
