I really like Maria in Coronation Street and I feel that she is very underated as a character and often overlooked.Shes a very good natured and kind character but forthrifght when neccesary.Certainly not a doormat.

I find her to be very likeable and easy to have empathy with.Shes already been on the show over 10 years and I could easily see her staying another 10 years.I think she could end up being a stalwart of the show and increase in popularity and stature.

I actually enjoyed her dynamic with Carla especially during the rape storyline.
For a character thats relatively young shes already got quite a lot of history on the show,-I think shes an unexpected choice or prediction to be a future stalwart but thats what i hope and expect shell become.

Anyone agree?

I think she will end up being an Audrey like figure in the street, poor Liam, that means he's the next Gail...

I think theres some element of truth in that although i think shes more sensible at her age than Audrey was.

Good post OP. I like Maria a lot and she probably is underrated.

She's great to watch when she's with Carla.

She kind of reminds me a bit of Emily Bishop, unlucky in love. Emily was around the same age.

I see some of the resemblance to Emily Bishop.Maria is quite moralistic but outside of a religious context.

I tend to completely zone out & visit my 'happy place' inside my head whenever Maria is on screen, she's just so bland & irrelevant.

Her whole life seems to revolve around getting jiggy with someone or other (like ten years & counting), there's just nothing there - no substance whatsoever to engage the viewer.

And don't get me started on that whiny, droning voice - nails down a wet window.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I used to like her when she was with Tyrone many years ago.

Now she belongs in the same category as Jason, Gary, Izzy and many more. For being bland and boring.

Agreed. Maria is the Corrie equivalent of Emmerdale's Katie. And equally as bland:yawn:

I like her. Her character kind of fades into the background but it is also characters like these who are the backbone of the show.

Fantastic. Dull as dishwater. And a terrible actress. She must pinch herself everyday. She's another one in a long line of soap stars who like most other current, and ex-soap stars will disappear without a trace if they leave, or get written out of the show. I appreciate times are hard, and you have to take what you can get. And right now, soaps are the thing that actors are clambering to be in. Regular work, equals regular money. But, it's the classic, a long-time-in-a-soap-can-kill-your-acting-career-stone-dead thing. Although if Maria (whatever her real name is? Sammi something, I think.) leaves, she won't have to give up her acting. As I've yet to see any evidence of any acting ever being done. I've been watching Corrie for over 40 years, and never miss it. And I appreciate that, it's difficult to maintain some kind of continuity with story lines and characters, etc. But, we're sometimes expected to swallow any old crap. I can only speak as a Corrie viewer, as I don't watch any other soaps. But from some of the comments I've read on here, Corrie is by no means unique. But in recent months, it really has went downhill very rapidly.

I find her dreary and tedious. As has already been said, every story she's a part of involves her getting jiggy with someone. Even when they've given her meaty storylines she manages to kill them stone dead. her so called 'rape' story with Frank Foster is a what I mean. She was so bad at handling the story that I could find no empathy for her. When her child was still born, again, within a few days she was off on holiday with Liam and there was no sadness about her character, she had forgotten all about the child. Yes, the script gave her lines to say, but a good actress would recall some history and call upon us to believe her character was in turmoil about losing a baby. There was none of that.
She could leave tomorrow and I wouldn't miss her one jot.

I would like to see Maria have more scenes with Tyrone and Fizz!
Also they need to bring back Ozzy.

I'm glad Samia has no plans to leave corrie as I think she's a fantastic actress and Maria is a very good character.

I don't mind her but I find her boring and irrelevant. She has the same storyline every other week but with different actors. She finds herself in a relationship, then gets cheated on or cheats on someone, then splits up, whines for a bit when the circle begins again. They've even started recycling the characters in her recycled storylines.

The character is about 30 now, time for her to stop playing the teenage games and start to let the character grow up or do something different. I wish they went further with the cancer storyline. She needs more ties to the street too. She doesn't seem to have any friends or family other than the odd character. She doesn't integrate much and sometimes seems a bit out of place.

She's good when she actually has a PROPER storyline. They have wasted her character a bit in the last couple of years.

No I can live without Maria in the street, I too find her very bland and one dimensional - I can't see any real character there at all.....oh and don't get me started on all her sighing.

I think I'd manage without her character tbh. She's very beige and completely wet.

I really don't mind Maria, but that maybe says something about the character, I neigher really like her or dislike her, there's not much to her but I do think she could come good.
