Hywel Bennett
A great actor who was a heart-throb in the 60's & 70's, a British sitcom superstar in the 80's thanks to "Shelley"/"The Return of Shelley" and in later years he carved out a niche playing Gangster type roles. Especially in 2003 when he played Jack Dalton in Eastenders.
Does anybody know what he's up to these days? On Wikipedia it says that he retired from acting in 2007 after being diagnosed with a heart defect. But as you know Wiki is not the most reliable of sources. I've never seen "Shelley", but it looks good and it surprised me that a show that ran for so long (1979 - 1992) has hardly ever been mentioned or repeated.

My late mum knew Hywel Bennet and said he was a really nice person!
He was quite a heart throb with his Thames TV comedy Shelly. Last time I saw him it was on The Bill a few years back. He looked dreadful but hey none of us is getting younger! I wish him well. |

The Family Way is one of my favourite films. Hayley Mills has aged so well, not so Hywel Bennett. I read that his marriage to Cathy McGowan broke up because of his alcoholism but that he had beaten it. Sad he seems to have gone down that road again.
I loved Shelley too, I wish they would repeat the series. Still, it's nice to watch The Family Way on DVD every now and again and see Hayley Mills and Hywel Bennett in all their glorious youth and beauty. |

I was watching some old episodes of The Bill a few weeks on Watch he was on there playing a pedophile. The episode was from about 2007. He put on a load of weight and looked old and bloated.
Goodness knows what he looks like now!

I saw him several years ago when I was walking past our local theatre, he looked at me and smiled and I thought, "Who was that?" then I saw his photos up outside, he has aged but was very pleasant to have smiled at me and I hav'nt forgotten it.

His dad was called Gordon Bennett? Brilliant!
I LOVED Shelley as a kid even though I'm sure I didn't actually get it. There was something about him that I found appealing |

He voiced King Arthur in the ITV tv series Robin of Sherwood back in 1986. The episode was called 'The Inheritance' about a young lady and her elderly father. I've got ROS on DVD in a box set. It's brilliant.
I've also seen Hywel in Murder Most Horrid. The show that starred Dawn French. I think the episode he was in was shown on BBC2 in 1994. I remember the Jack Dalton storyline in EastEnders when Dennis Rickman Killed him. Good writing and acting. Shame the same cannot be said now.
