Yes I thought Hywel was wonderful in his younger days. I was quite shocked when I saw him in EastEnders, in fact I did not recognise him at all. How sad. He had so many opportunities to really make it big in acting and I do not know what happened. I have no idea he had married Cathy McGowan, isn't she now married to Michael Ball, the musical theatre actor?

I used to think he was lovely - I have a DVD of him in Endless Night ( an Agatha Christie) and he was so goo looking in that - and I used to really fancy him in Shelley.
I hope he is doing OK. Wasn't he is Eastenders at one point ?

Blast from the past....loved him..he married Cathy Mcgowan and I think they had a daughter Emma
Emma was also the name of Shelley's daughter. Didnt find out until fairly recently that Hywel's brother is Alun Lewis of Birds Of A Feather/Emmerdale fame

A couple of months back, Yesterday repeated a "Last of the Summer Wine" episode from 2002 featuring Hywel. A few days after that, ITV4 showed an old "Sweeney" ep. with him in also. The difference in his appearance was noticeable, his drinking probably contributed to his current bloated look. It never effected his performances though.

This is a bit random but, Has anybody else noticed how Zac Efron strongly resembles Hywel in his younger days?

Typical DS

Someone post a thread & it ends up as a horrible "oh look at his personal problems" thread

Good work konebyvax

WTF? The OP was asking what he's doing now and i recalled the last time i had heard what he was doing. Not really my problem that it wasn't pleasant. If i'd read he had been doing charity work etc I would have posted that. Do you live in some sort of Disney-esque parallel universe where everything is fluffy and nothing bad ever happens?

Perhaps you can tell the OP what he is up to nowadays? Or start an Appreciation Thread?

Now you mention it there is a definite resemblance to him in younger days, don't you agree? Hywel was really good looking, even better than his brother then.

Alright, I'll concede that I may have over reacted,

DS is so full of horrible stuff about people, some users do nothing else.

It's clear that wasn't your intention, so please accept my apologies

Just watching Loot and not a great film but good lines and Hywel Bennett has a natural on front of the camera. Lee Remick is good too. Hywel Bennett features in a few of my favourite early 70's films Twisted Nerve, anyone who wondered where the Kill Bill whistle comes from look no further and Endless Night an Agatha Christie short story. I do not watch Eastenders and only saw snippets of Shelley as a little left wing for my family and I was a little young to understand the politics so in my mind he is fixed in that early 70's era in his mid twenties. I really liked those performances though so not a bad era to have made your mark.

I thought Shelley was fantastic at the time

his verbal jousting with the bloke at the unemployment office .............

I think he also turned up in one of those spy series around that time..........'Tinker, Tailor' or The Sandbaggers, that kind of thing

he was quite a big star

I loved Hywell Bennett in Twisted Nerve (even though he was a violent psychopath ) Must have been my age at the time But he was a huge heart throb when he was young, along with David Hemmings and Terence Stamp.

I must admit i had the same thought, especially considering how this year has gone with Celebrity deaths and his history with Alcoholism. Brilliant actor, loved him in EastEnders as Jack Dalton a truly terrifying gangster also brilliant as Peter Baxter in the Bill. I hope he can beat his demons with the booze.

Looking on Wiki, he doesn't seem to have done anything since 2003, he is 72, but did he really retire at 59?

Hywel Bennett. superb actor. Often very underrated.

Although I find repeats of Shelly funny, I think he deserved better roles during that period.

He had heart complications I think. Forcing him to retire.

My favourite was "Twisted Nerve" still remember that soundtrack, spooooooookkkkyyyyy
Twisted Nerve and The Family Way are two of my most favourite films ever. I really fancied HB when I was a teenager, he oozed sex appeal and such a gorgeous face.

And yes, the whistling on Twisted Nerve is my ringtone on my phone - people think it's from Kill Bill - no, it's from Twisted Nerve, way before Kill Bill.
