Yes I thought Hywel was wonderful in his younger days. I was quite shocked when I saw him in EastEnders, in fact I did not recognise him at all. How sad. He had so many opportunities to really make it big in acting and I do not know what happened. I have no idea he had married Cathy McGowan, isn't she now married to Michael Ball, the musical theatre actor?

I used to think he was lovely - I have a DVD of him in Endless Night ( an Agatha Christie) and he was so goo looking in that - and I used to really fancy him in Shelley.
I hope he is doing OK. Wasn't he is Eastenders at one point ? |

This is a bit random but, Has anybody else noticed how Zac Efron strongly resembles Hywel in his younger days? |

Typical DS
Someone post a thread & it ends up as a horrible "oh look at his personal problems" thread Good work konebyvax ![]() WTF? The OP was asking what he's doing now and i recalled the last time i had heard what he was doing. Not really my problem that it wasn't pleasant. If i'd read he had been doing charity work etc I would have posted that. Do you live in some sort of Disney-esque parallel universe where everything is fluffy and nothing bad ever happens? ![]() Perhaps you can tell the OP what he is up to nowadays? Or start an Appreciation Thread? |

Emma was also the name of Shelley's daughter. Didnt find out until fairly recently that Hywel's brother is Alun Lewis of Birds Of A Feather/Emmerdale fame

Just watching Loot and not a great film but good lines and Hywel Bennett has a natural on front of the camera. Lee Remick is good too. Hywel Bennett features in a few of my favourite early 70's films Twisted Nerve, anyone who wondered where the Kill Bill whistle comes from look no further and Endless Night an Agatha Christie short story. I do not watch Eastenders and only saw snippets of Shelley as a little left wing for my family and I was a little young to understand the politics so in my mind he is fixed in that early 70's era in his mid twenties. I really liked those performances though so not a bad era to have made your mark.

I thought Shelley was fantastic at the time
his verbal jousting with the bloke at the unemployment office ............. ![]() I think he also turned up in one of those spy series around that time..........'Tinker, Tailor' or The Sandbaggers, that kind of thing he was quite a big star |

) Must have been my age at the time But he was a huge heart throb when he was young, along with David Hemmings and Terence Stamp.

Looking on Wiki, he doesn't seem to have done anything since 2003, he is 72, but did he really retire at 59?

Hywel Bennett. superb actor. Often very underrated. Although I find repeats of Shelly funny, I think he deserved better roles during that period. Quote:

Twisted Nerve and The Family Way are two of my most favourite films ever. I really fancied HB when I was a teenager, he oozed sex appeal and such a gorgeous face.
