Is there a site that tells you how much space on a device is taken up by...

Mandatory installed Software?

Unfortunately, we know that when we buy say a 16GB device that we don't have 16GB to play around with. In reality approx 1 GB (for example) might be taken up by the mandatory Operating system and non-removable 'base' software, so in reality only 15GB is free.

What I want to know is there a website or some database which lists how many free Gigabytes you really get on all the big devices on the market at the minute?

I don't know if there's a site that keeps track of this as it will change with OS versions, but I would expect to loose around 3GB- 4GB to filesystem overheads and the OS on a high end tablet.

Ouch, just 27GB is free of the new 32GB iPod Touch

That's very surprising. I have over 28GB usable on my 32GB iPhone 5 so there's no reason why it should be that low on an iPod Touch.

Some of that will simply be with how storage space is calculated in reality as opposed to how its marketed. As its easier they market storage space using decimals so
1000B = 1KB
1000KB = 1MB
1000MB = 1GB
1000GB = 1TB

But computers operate is Decimal so they consider each unit to be slightly more than 1000 a GB for example is 1074MB.

So the device will see a 32GB drive as around 29GB
