Actually, I just got the thought, that what if Brendan swears he'll leave Ste alone if God lets him live, or something?

I think seeing Ste this hurt again will remind him and make him feel guilty about the brutality in the past, and he won't want to take the chance of hurting Ste like this himself ever again.

He'll have already given up Ste we think, cos of CakeGate, but still, I can see this happening.

It's definitely Brendan's, it's exactly the same, even the chain. They wouldn't emphasis on his hand, the ring and the cross so much if it wasn't.
