Oh I didn't mean odd as in bad, it just looks like they have been caught in the middle of pulling funny faces.

If JP's coming back from having been a male prostitute, how are they going to be able to continue having him do that though, and still for the same reasons?

I won't even be drawn to watching his 6:30 hooking up and snogging and taking money.

I suppose he might be suffering from a really serious depression, and perhaps he finally decides to turn his life around and comes into the village? Of course he's gonna slip up now and then. And cry about it afterwards

Aww

He'll have Doug to infectiously cry with him and wash his balls.

This is lovely (Note they've said who Wallis is )

But... isn't it the case that homosexual people can't donate blood? Or am I getting the wrong idea? I know they ask if you've had... ahem, you know

ETA: Oh I should specify, gay men?

The rules have changed. You can now give blood if you're a man who hasn't had sex with a man for a year, or as a woman who hasn't had sex with a man who's had sex with a man, for a year. It used to be for life for men.

ETA Hello btw.

Oh really? That's good to know I heard they ask you all sorts of questions like that. But they don't ask if you've had straight sex...

Actually I say that's good but what about a gay couple who are monogamous, or you know, use protection, and they can't give blood unless they've been celibate a year? There's a lot more progress needs doing

eta: Hello

Yeah, basically, they can't donate if they have had sex in the last 12 months. Same as people who have tattoos (which is why I've never been able to donate, always have a new tattoo).

Whilst I know they do this on a broad spectrum as gay men are the largest HIV carriers, the kind of gay men that are willing to give blood aren't exactly the type to have HIV anyways.

It's all very political, is giving blood.

If you're gay you can donate blood as long as you haven't had sex in the past twelve months. Apparently it's because gay men are the ones most at risk.

Yes, it's progress but there's still a way to go. It depends on the science really.

They ask loads of questions about your sex life, whether you're gay or straight.

Yeah it just doesn't seem fair, khughes. I guess it made me think of it because PJ was involved in that campaign and he's gay, but it makes me sad to think of people who really want to give blood and can quite happily, and they're turned down because of their sexuality

Oh yes I know that, I've heard Just I knew a straight guy who went who was only asked questions about being with other men (he hadn't) and yet was asked nothing about being with women I just find it a little baffling.

I don't know about anyone else but I would have assumed that all the blood used for transfusions would be screened for infectious diseases anyway.

Bit worrying if it's not.

Honestly, I work in a Haematology clinic sometimes and giving/receiving blood is a far too long winded process.

But then, I see far too many people come in, who have contracted thinks like Hep and HIV through what is known as "needlestick injury".

But I still don't understand why it differs from straight/gay. I think if you have had unprotected sex within 12 month, outside of a monogamous relationship, you shouldn't be able to give blood.

ETA - Ally, it is, but somethings don't always show up in certain screenings or something along those lines. And it is also for the protection of the staff on the other end of it all. It's just a lot of effort.

Oh that's scary, khughes But I agree, any unprotected sex. And as ally said, surely they test it anyway?

The form seems to change each time, but everyone is asked if they've had sex in certain countries, if they've ever been given money or drugs for sex, if they've ever had sex with a man (or for women, if they've had sex with a man who's had sex with a man) and others which I can't remember right now.
I don't know about anyone else but I would have assumed that all the blood used for transfusions would be screened for infectious diseases anyway.

It is screened for lots of things, but the HIV one isn't quick/sensitive enough to get it done before the donation passes its sell by date. They have to minimise the chance of anything slipping through the net, and they can only do that by avoiding taking blood from people in higher risk categories.

This is very educational, Sarah thank you.

Also onto a (well, not lighter) note. I hope Brendan makes Cheryl feel a little bad for planning Ste and Doug's wedding she doesn't even give Brendan a thought, does she?

I suppose that's fair enough, I imagine the statistical chances of catching HIV or the like is probably miniscule.

I know my luck though and I would probably be the one in million.
