Settings > sounds > Default notifications ( change to whatever or silent)

I have mine set to silent, the led flashing and the phone vibrating when you pick it up is enough without any sounds.

That was it. Whistle was the default.

My wife has it on her S2 and it got a bit confusing the other day after I upgraded my S3 to Jellybean and did a factory reset as they were both whistling when texts came through.

I spent quite a while trying to work out how to allocate different notifications to different apps. I had it in my head that “default notifications” would allow me to do this from one place, before realising you need to do it within the apps themselves. I was getting quite a annoyed getting up to check the phone for a text message only to find it was linkedin junk.

For anyone who wants differing notification sounds to distinguish between text messages, mail and everything else:

Messages: Settings, Notification Settings, Select Rington
Gmail: Settings, then click on the account name then Ringtone & Vibrate, then ringtone.

You could just disable notifications in the notification bar on ICS not sure why they removed it in JB.

How is your S3 anyway whoever?

I'm loving it .

It didn't just work disabling notifications btw. I had driving mode enabled which meant it kept telling i had emails, literally at work i must have heard "1 new mail" half a dozen times. I had to apologise to the others in the office.

Hmm I don't really mess around with the notification settings to much as I have my phone completely muted with an app 'volume control' by corecode. I think i've mentioned before i havent even a clue what my ringtone is. I'm not a big fan of being available all of the time. You could use that for when you need it to be quiet

I dont have a ring tone either, just vibrate at max. But if you have driving mode on, it overrides the silence in the notification settings.

Volume controls over rides everything (except those pesky side volume buttons) I've been using it for a couple of years now. Never needed to adjust volume on whatever phone i've had by using the phone settings. Everything down to the camera goes to silent. Way easier than figuring out the numerous volume controls on the S3.
