music montages at the top of every hollyoaks episode
apologies if this thread has already cropped up, but what are your opinions on it?
i used to really enjoy them, but now i feel like they're a bit redundant, and the visual content accompanying them often is a bit predictable and useless. I know they only last for thirty seconds or so but the way it sets up all the scenes for the rest of the episode annoys me a little and feels like it restricts what we're gonna get for the rest of the episode as you already know what it's gonna be centred around. any other opinions? |

Yeah it's basically just a roundabout way of doing recaps. Instead of showing old material from previous episodes (which a lot of shows do) to remind us of storylines which will be focussed on in the new episode, they do these little "set-up" scenes which I think are extremely contrived. I'd rather just have a recap.
In fact, I haven't watched Hollyoaks for YEARS... but I occasionally catch the start of it, don't they HAVE a recap these days? Before the titles? That makes the little montages even more redundant!! As they started off as an alternate way of having recaps. |

They used to be absolutely terrible in Lucy Allan's days, but I don't mind them so much. It would be weird to lose them.

Yeah I've completely got used to them now. Can't imagine not having them! They usually choose good music too.

I really disliked the dream sequences, they often made it feel like a children's programme. The previously on segments are great and I applaud Marquess for introducing them. I do love Hollyoaks' use of current music though and if they can set up a scene using a little music montage then great - but it's not needed all of the time.

The opening scenes are good when they're done properly though. |

I like them. They set up the mood for the episode and they can be very clever and creative sometimes.
I particularly liked one from last week which used glasses of water to connect the different characters and portray their individual circumstances. Doug frustratedly drinking his, Ruby drinking hers tentatively and Tony knocking his over and spilling it. It's little details like that which give it an extra element for the audience. |

I dont mind the music throughout the show if its called for but i hate that there is never a continuing scene from the last eps cliff hanger, i really hope they get axed there is no need for them and it restricts it too much
