Halogen oven

I have just got a halogen oven any other owners here?

2 questions.

I have turned it on with no food in for a minute just checking it works,a bit of smoke came out so i turned it off is this normal as its new?

When it's been used the instructions said to not leave the lid on the machine to put it on the counter,will this not be too hot to leave on a counter?

you should turn it on for a while [at full temperature i think] to burn off the oil.

you can get a stand for the lid but i put mine lights up.
