5 pretty average looking young guys, all the charisma of a barrage balloon, with adequate voices.

Is what has happened to them, the equivalent of some mere mortal winning the euro millions?

Yes. Never in history have I been more bemused about the popularity of a group than I am with this lot. They're so bland, they almost make Westlife look exciting and yet they're being raved about like they're the second coming - just bizarre

If fame is what you want, I guess. I'd personally hate that level of fame. There comes a point when your life is no longer yours.

But they clearly wanted fame, so congrats to them I guess.

Isn't that why everyone enters X factor ? I know they all say it is to sing music but they could do that on a local level without the fame.

I agree they were lucky been in the right place at the right time but all 5 work damm hard so it isn't just luck

Very very lucky. Especially Louis, his audition was appalling, couldn't sing a note in tune.

Of course they're lucky. Good luck to them, they seem nice. It won't last forever so they need to make as much and as fast as possible. The lead singer reminds me of a young Mick Jagger (said in a Louis' voice).

As if any of them will be around as long as Mick Jagger!

Indeed they are very lucky. What a pity we haven't got anyone on this years show whose name we can corrupt in a hilarious way.

Of course they won't. Times are different. We live in a fast throw away society

Actually I do wish Mick would hang up the microphone (same with Maccers) Nothing worse than an old rocker trying to recreate their youth

They are doing pretty good to have a net worth of 100 mill after 2 years , they may as well milk it for what its worth while they can. Not my cup of tea at all, but they are more wealthy than Cowell now lol

As long as people are willing to pay exorbitant prices for tickets this won't happen.

It was all meant to be. The moment I first saw a picture of them together at the judges' houses in Spain, I knew they would be big.

I agree. I don't think there has ever been a boyband with such average singing capability to become this successful on a global scale. It's probably the lack of boybands in the industry that has been their biggest slice of luck. 10-15 years ago when you had Blue, Westlife, Backstreet Boys, and N'SYNC they'd have come and gone without making a dent in the market.

Lol, I agree. They have average looks, average vocals, average music, average personalities etc.

I guess that "average-ness" makes them more relatable to the fans.

I think it is frightening how gullible 15 year old girls are.

There seems to be similar hysteria surrounding the two limp dick boybands on X Factor this year with no discernible reason why

Don't you love a world where fame comes to those with no talent, achievements or merit apart from having a nice haircut?

Also, the hysteria over that HORRIBLE US X Factor boyband Playback (unattractive, embarassing performances etc) really confounds me.

I can't listen to Radio 1 anymore, having to listen to them prattling on about 1D as if they are greatest musicians Britain has ever known rather than an average karaoke boyband with an excellent PR team and lots of luck is intolerable.

And I'm absolutely sick of hearing about the Harry Styles- would rather have a sit down and read the entire back catalogue of Katie Price and Kerry Katona autobiographies than hear another word about him.

Probably Niall and Louis are lucky, I think the other 3 are quite talented. And I don't think you could call Zayn average looking, or the rest of them (probably bar Louis)

I wouldn't like to be that famous, there's a video of them coming out of a tattoo place and there's literally like 100 girls outside screaming and chasing them around :/

Good minds think a-like. I find it really bewildering...not so much that the young girls like them but the older fans who could be their mothers and grandmothers. What on earth is it that I'm apparently missing which makes these little boys desirable to anyone over the age of 14?
