I don't think you can do a Tango AS, not sure about Quickstep. I'm sure this was discussed on another thread not so long ago but I can't remember which one it was to search for it!

I thought the QS was acceptable and the tango wasn't. But they move the goalposts every year with the AS.

Rachel and Vincent did a Quickstep AS, didn't they?

This is what I found on the subject:

http://www.dancesport.uk.com/articles/amsmooth.htm

It must be allowed on Strictly.

No, a foxtrot (the dance which Len underscored in the semi's, causing votegate )

Yes, his first AS with Rachel was quickstep (changed to a foxtrot one for the semi final.)

They did an American Smooth before that in week eight which I think was Quickstep based.

Their first AS was a quickstep based one though (it was the year where they were trying out this idea of repeating a dance with new music and choreography).

Technically quickstep isn't allowed as a base for AS, but in practice I don't think it will matter much to the judges.

will be interesting to see what base dance Natalie choreographs an AS to.

looking forward to it, especially as my 2 favourite boys have the same dance

wonders how that will play out in the marks

Rachel & Vincent's AS was QS based.

Dani & Vincent - Quickstep (BBC 'Friday Feeling' clip)
Denise & James - ?
Kimberley & Pasha - ? (Jive? - not confirmed)
Lisa & Robin - ? ('shimmying' involved according to Robin on twitter - salsa/samba?)
Louis & Flavia - American Smooth (Team Flouia twitter)
Michael & Natalie - American Smooth (Michael's twitter)
Nicky & Karen - Jive (Nicky's twitter)
Richard & Erin - ? (Salsa? - not confirmed)
Victoria & Brendan - ?

Michael is very fortunate to get ballroom this week - the public may not have voted him through with a second dodgy latin on the trot. But that could be excellent judging by the lifts in the salsa and his strength in ballroom.

I think the confusion arises because a Strictly AS is a Strictly invention/confection. They used to have their own guidelines on the website. So it has lifts (which 'proper' American Smooth doesn't) and you can do it with any of the ballroom dances including QS (even though 'proper' American Smooth doesn't apply to QS).....which means they can make the rules up as they go along

Nicky and Jive doesn't sound like a marriage made in heaven to be honest... We'll see though I guess.

My bet is Victoria has latin and Denise has ballroom for a 5/4 split

Last year's Wembley was Latin-heavy so all the rest could be doing Latin, depending where you put the Charleston. Which I think there will be at least one of since they mentioned it in the programme information. (I know they also mentioned Disco, and that's not going to happen so it isn't meant to be taken that literally, but I still think we'll see a Charleston.)

Denise, Kimberley or Victoria for the Charleston then - I can't see anywhere saying Kimberley has jive except for the person in this thread. I think there'd only be one as it's a dance specifically associated with the 20s.

I assume each couple is representing a different decade from 20s up to the noughties, although we'll have to hope for a clearer picture soon...

I suppose she could pick QS or foxtrot given that Michael's obviously at home with both - although it sounds like going for foxtrot would be a good idea to make sure Michael doesn't suffer from comparison with Louis

I predict a 70s disco samba for Lisa to round out the themes a bit.

Wonder who'll get the 50s jive and who'll get the 80s one a la Jason and Kristina last year?

Praying Victoria has ballroom

Presumably Foxtrot so they can represent the 1930s, as that's when that dance was really popular, albeit in a slightly different guise to the foxtrot of today.

Didn't Matt and Aliona do a Rumba AS? Wasn't there a Paso one as well? It's all a bit silly now.

has to be based around a ballroom dance. Matt and Aliona's was certainly quirky
